Sciatic nerve pain

So I had a climbing accident where I fell and landed on my butt and had trauma to my sciatic nerve. I'm otherwise healthy and in shape, so the doctor said there is an 85% chance I'll make a full recovery in 4-6 weeks.

So in the mean time, what do I do? I get periodic numbness and stabbing pain randomly in my leg and it feels so weak that if I look at it the wrong way I'm going to twist my knee. I'm using crutches because of the weakness and because occasionally my knee just gives out, so sometimes I'm walking normally carrying crutches around with me and sometimes I'm full on using the crutches.

What kind of exercise should/can I do? The doctor didn't give me any suggestions just "don't do anything that hurts".

***I'm also looking for support, anyone else been through this? share your story (hopefully ending with how it eventually got better and you're fine now)

Thanks guys!!

Ouch! Sciatica is no fun at all! I fell down the stairs approx 2 years ago. Within 6 months I was having excruciating sciatic nerve pain- this was attributed to possibly the trauma, 2 pregnancies in 2 years, my genetic hip structure, and being overweight (a great combination!) Anyways, I ended up having surgery shortly after the pain was debilitating. The doctors told me PT was pf no use at this point, I had herniated 2 discs. I had the surgery and did PT for a bit after. In PT we did a lot of core exercises- I also looked to youtube for yoga poses (this was after my recovery period of 6 weeks with no bending/lifting/twisting).
So, in short I would ask your doc for a referral to PT and check out youtube for any stretches that may bring you relief. Good luck, sciatic pain sucks!

There are some great yoga poses and stretches that help stretch out the backs and hips and help with sciatic pain. Go to youtube!

My doctor was a total pain in the butt. I also (likely) partially tore my ACL and meniscus and he told me it's not a big deal because he's had 3 reconstructive knee surgeries. So he wouldn't give me a brace for my knee or PT for my knee OR sciatica. I'm getting a second opinion but not sure what to do in the mean time.

Just came across some on Pinterest at this link http://www.fitsugar.com/Yoga-Sciatica-23949884#photo-5

I'm going to try some. I've been getting some the last few weeks from sitting too long in one position. Easy fix for me just get up and move but hoping some stretching will make them stop.
