Be Honest!!! Tesco UltraSlim

Ok so I was thinking of kick starting my diet with Ultra slim because:

1. I am starting a new job and I get dizzy spells because of my irregular eating patterns. I was hoping my energy levels might level out and teach me to eat at regular times.

2. I will have few breaks at this job and I hate eating in the morning, hopefully the shakes will be easier to fit in

3. I am hoping it will kick start my weight loss

4. I think, after a couple of weeks, it will be easier to swap for healthy meals than to have another false start with trying to eat regularly.

Am I thinking right? Will I be really hungry all the time? Is the high sugar a big concern if its only for a couple of weeks?

I am really trying to help myself to set off on a long road of being healthy for life.

Your body is not a car, you cannot kickstart it.
Using this product will not help you make healthy food choices.
If you lose weight fast, it will just be water weight and probably muscle mass, not fat.

Waste of money and possibly unhealthy, since that stuff is not checked and can contain a high dose of cafeine and diuretics.

You can easily make a smoothie/shake yourself that will be more healthy and filling.
Prep the night before, and just toss in the blender in the morning and drink it.
Milk, oats, fruit, maybe bit of protein powder/greek yoghurt, done.

Probably won't get much love for the meal replacement shakes on these forums.

If you're in it for the long haul, there's no need to jump start your diet. Take it slow and steady, make changes that you can live with for life.

Instead of shakes, maybe try something like quest bars or just bring some fruit for snacks?

drinking meal replacement shakes wont help you learn portion control or how to eat a balanced diet.
  • Thank you everyone for your replies. This s my first ever attempt at changing my eating and I have no idea where to start. I guess fads just sound easier. Is their any sort of meal bars or anything that are good?

Fit a poptart into your daily calorie goal and bring it with you. Simple as that.

How about just eating healthily and exercising..
That works well for losing weight.

People here are very against any form of "quick" weight loss programs and liquid diets. They argue that it is not sustainable, it is not an actual change in your eating habits, it is a money scam and expensive, and that many put the weight right back on because they haven't learned proper eating habits.

While i also wouldn't recommend relying on these shakes to "kickstart" your weightloss, i also don't think they are bad for you. If you want to use them because you don't have time to eat breakfast, or if you need a quick meal from time to time, then i think they are probably fine. I drink a little breakfast shake every morning for breakfast, and i am doing just fine so far.

I would recommend also eating "normal" meals when possible as well so you can start to learn portion sizes and healthy foods. Then you are not depending only on the shakes for your weightloss, and you are teaching yourself healthy habits.

Well, then, it sounds like you are at the perfect stage to learn about healthy eating and to develop good habits! Congratulations.

When you have a chance to learn more, go to Harvard's Nutritionsource for a good readable set of pages to explain why to eat what we eat and to see the "Healthy Eating Plate" which is a good model for how to structure your food choices. http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/

Soon you will find that everybody on MFP has a different understanding of what is right for them. You get to decide what is right for you.

In answer to your immediate question, look for healthy alternatives to throw in your bag to take to work. I gather you are in the UK. In the US, "string cheese" is fairly common at the grocery store. It's little sticks of mozzarella that are individually wrapped. I throw these in when I'm headed out and need to do breakfast on the run. Also, pick fruits that are "have their own wrappers" like a banana or orange. Here in the US, the groceries also sell what they call "baby cut carrots" which some brands have in single-serving bags all pre-washed.

Choosing easy to carry plain foods like these means you are eating good nutritious foods and not wasting money on whatever sugars and fillers they put in the shake mixes.

Basically, there's nothing magic about any weightloss product either in the UK or the US so don't fall for the hype. Spend your hard earned money on real food and fun!
