Want to eat more protein ... But I'm vegan?

Hi there!

People on this site always say that eating more protein keeps you satiated, while a carb based diet tends to cause more cravings. I try to reach my daily requirements for protein every day, but lots of people also encourage that you go past that limit. The thing is, I'm vegan.

I'm not vegan for weight loss. I've been vegan for ages and I can't imagine stopping. Dairy products make me feel very sick (lactose intolerant, I think) and I know what they can be laced with due to current production. And while I don't eat meat for ethical reasons, I've just never been a fan of it anyway.

I know a healthy vegan diet has adequate amounts of protein for survival, what are ways I could incorporate more into my lifestyle? Should I drink protein drinks (I've heard of Shakeology, which offers vegan protein shakes)? Or are there any protein-rich plant-based foods I should try to eat on a daily basis?

Beans, legumes, Chick peas all are very protein rich. Greens is another item that is very protein dense, but you will have to eat lot more.

Nuts is another category that is protein rich.

If you still unable to meet your goals from above then a plant based protein powder (I use pea protein power) is an option.

Hi, I found this site to be very interesting and informative for additional protein sources - I too am vegan.

you can find this info fairly easily by doing a Google search.. and I mean, if you've been a vegan for a long time, you should know what you need to eat to still get enough protein. :/ Not to sound rude or anything.

Chickpeas (though any beans - kidney, black, lima), nuts, peanut/almond butter, tofu, TVP, spinach.. there are a lot more.

I eat enough protein, I'm almost always at my goal. I just want to try and add more.
  • Gluten also called seitan is very high in protein. You can make it yourself and it freezes great. So much cheaper than the store. Buy vital wheat gluten at the store and there are lots of recipes online for making it. Basically you mix it with a few seasonings and water kneed it to a dough cut it in slices and boil them in broth for about two hours. It makes a huge pot and freeze in individual servings. But also, edamame (frozen, soybeans) super tasty. You can buy them toasted in the asian isle and they are great for snacks or on salads very high protein. Beans, hummus (make your own in like 10 min), lentils, quinoa (grain, cook it like rice) is also a complete protein. But for feelings of saitey (spelling?) fat is really a key. Avocado, olives, cook in some virgin coconut oil or drizzle some olive oil on your food. It doesn't take a lot but fat really helps with the feeling of being full and satisfied. Plus, healthy fats are just healthy!

Seitan and protein powder (not "shake" powder) will provide whatever amount of protein you need, nearly entirely through protein calories. Most other "protein rich" vegan options are fat and/or carb richer.

I am a vegan and a fat-craver. The only way I can feel satisfied is from oily, greasy, fat-laden meals. Protein, sugar, etc., won't work for me at all!

I just started using Arbonne protein powder in my shakes (I stopped using whey protein because of lactose intolerance). It's vegan and the protein source comes from pea, cranberry and rice. They have vanilla and chocolate, and so far I like them.
