Real or Fake?

Hello Everyone!
In your opinion what do you think is better -- the real stuff or fake alternatives? When it comes to choosing things like sweeteners, coffee creamer, butter, margarine, anything, do you choose the fat free, sugar free, low fat, ect option or do you go for the real deal all natural stuff.
I would love to hear your individual thoughts on this topic and what you choose for yourself.

whatever has the best macro breakdown (tends to be the natural stuff, but not always). i gave up on distinguishing between processed and unprocessed awhile ago, everything nowadays has something in it that could kill you, so i just base it off nutritional content0

Butter is better than margirine. Coconut oil is better than both butter and margirine.Sugar free sweeteners are OK in small amounts.
If you're craving sweets, there are tons of ways to make things taste just as good by following certain recepies. I do a lot of this kind of thing and it's made a huge difference this year. I pretty much don't cheat at all because I don't get cravings since I'm eating tastey deserts that are actually not bad for me.
I follow a lot of this guy's recipies: http://forums.rxmuscle.com/showthread.php?65240-the-solutions-recipe-thread0 -

there are lots of fat free foods that aren't "fake" or processed. i like fage 0% non-fat yogurt, and i often sweeten with stevia, and special foods with a little xylitol. while neither are sugar, both are all natural, not created in a lab. and for the most part, i eat based on nutritional content, also.0

I'm going with real! Give me real sugars......real butters and real boobs. Wait....that was part of the question, right :drinker: :flowerforyou:0

When I was on Weight Watchers, I was obsessed with ALWAYS having the lowest-calorie option (artificially sweetened yogurts, fat-free cheeses, "light" everything etc.). When I joined MFP, I realized there was more to life than worrying about low-cal/fat-free all the time and that I COULD eat full-fat "real" foods within my daily calorie allowance/macros. As long as you watch your portions and log it, butter IS better!0

For myself it depends on the food. I am not afraid of processed foods but I tend to make up my meals with unprocessed items and use the processed foods as extras. I use coffee whitener because I am lactose intolerant, I prefer margarine as a spread but butter for cooking and I am not afraid of using Splenda in my coffee because I don't like to drink a lot of calories. It saves room for more "real" foods. I believe in everything in moderation. It has worked for me anyway.0

Depends on what my calorie and macro allowance is at that moment.
I love Pringles, but can't justify the calories for so little nutrition. I buy the fat free - still get the crunch and salt, with only a fraction of the calories.
Ice cream? Full fat, all the way.0 -
Real cream in coffee, with Splenda!
Same... well real half and half and splenda.0 -
I go for the real stuff, natural ingredients whenever I can. I just try and control portions.
Good luck!0 -
The title of this thread is also the name of a people watching game my husband and I play when we go to vegas.0

It depends on what it is. I refuse to compromise on cheese. Lowfat cheese is gross. Also, ice cream and sweets in general. If I'm splurging on dessert I want the real thing.
But I do go with sugar substitutes in my coffee, lower sugar instant oatmeal, lighter salad dressings, and some things like that. We use real butter, but I only use it for cooking.0 -
Like most men I don't care. However, if I am hitting on you and you think they are horrible, I will quickly agree with you.0

Mostly unprocessed ("real"), fresh, additive free foods for me due to a medical condition that is very sensitive to certain ingredients, esp. artificial sweeteners, preservatives, added vitamins (esp. Bs and C), caffeine, carbonation, coffee/tea/sodas, alcohol, chocolate, vinegar and other acids of all types, most fruits, yellow #5, etc.
These items set my bladder, and therefore other lady parts due to proximity and shared nerve supply, on holy hell fire if I consume them...usually within 1 hour of ingestion, and the fire can last up to two weeks. It is a medical condition called Interstitial Cystitis, it is chronic, and incurable, and very, very painful. Eliminating the foods that are most likely to irritate a wounded bladder has completely changed my life for the better. I still have pain, but it is much more tolerable due to changing my diet, taking some medications, some alternative treatments, and altering my physical endeavors (for instance, I haven't mountain biked in years, but am going to try again soon).
If I had my choice, I'd eat a variety of everything in moderation. However, I only have a choice of being in pain or not. Not being in pain is always preferable.0 -
My coffee was one sugar, one splenda, three pumps of hazelnut and half-and-half.
I tend to move toward the "real" stuff, but not always.
I went through a phase of drinking soy/coconut milk early on because my baby needed whole milk and it just made sense to go lower cal than 2%. Now I run, so I need the protein/fat/carbs in milk.0 -
I prefer the real stuff... Real cream, real milk, butter, yogurt, cheese. If I'm going to spend the calories on it, I would like to enjoy it!0

Real products in moderation.0

I tend to go with the real stuff. Sugar and half and half in my coffee. I have IBS so a lot of artificial sweeteners bother me.0

While I don't prefer to categorize food as real or fake, I do have several preferences, some based on taste, availability, or macro-matching:
I like butter, but not margarine (taste is everything here, to me)
I prefer full-fat cheeses (exception--part skim mozzarella--the predominant option at my store)
I like fat free Greek yogurt (I can't tell the difference, and the store brand, which is cheaper, only comes in 0% fat)
I like low fat (1% or 2%) milk--I don't use cream/creamer in my coffee
I like Diet Pepsi (not a frequent soda drinker, and I don't like working regular soda into my macros)
I use honey, sugar, or Stevia/Splenda in recipes--depends on the recipe and my calorie goal whether I use real or artificial sweetener0 -
I will eat almost anything edible (with a good macro and micro breakdown).0
