I was a chubby extra on the TV show "Fargo"

On a whim I talked my way into being an extra on the FX show “Fargo”. I was asked to bring three changes of clothing but the wardrobe people nixed them all, saying they looked to new, to colorful and not casual enough.
Suddenly I was in the nightmare situation of trying on pants/shirts in a crowded room with 6 other men (and 50 others waiting). 3 female wardrobe PA’s fussed over me trying to make things fit (to the point of undressing me themselves). The only reason I wasn’t just side-lined was I was a friend of the 1st Asst Director and it was a point of pride to make chubby old me picture ready. At that moment I would rather been in a dentists chair having a root canal then be in that crowded dressing room. It's a chubby guys worst nightmare......
In the end, they made it work.
I would have never experienced it if I was 40 pounds heavier and it was a thrill to be in a Salesman’s banquet scene with Martin Freeman and a bar scene with Billy Bob Thornton and Allison Tolman. Life definitely happens after the pounds start to come off.

That's awesome! I've worked as an extra on a few different things and the first time I was on set, I had to dress as a 40's hs student. Well, I had to use the wardrobe department's clothes and the lead wardrobe lady was...well...not too nice about my size. After seeing everyone else get fitted into these beautiful clothes from the time period, another wardrobe lady came to me and told me to turn around. She was very sweet and found a belted dress for me that I wanted to wear home, along with a pair of oxfords and decorative socks. After changing, the ladies on the hair/makeup trailer made me feel beautiful (three even wanted to do my hair at the same time, so they compromised on it lol).
After getting glammed up, the lead wardrobe lady finally gave me a grin and said "Much better", before handing me jewelry to go with my look. For once, I felt like a star and I can honestly share the feeling of working on a set. I was hooked and worked on a few more productions before settling in with my current full-time job, which leaves no time for the traveling. However, if anything local comes up and fits my schedule, I will surely apply0 -
That's really cool!0

Woo hoo, a fellow Calgarian actor! Yep, for better or worse in this biz, it's better to be less big. I've certainly been busier in this town since I dropped a few - and more importantly I've been able to keep up with the pace needed.
And if nothing else, it's easier to dress a skinnier guy as a chubby guy, than to dress a chubby guy as a skinny guy.
