Hey Runners! (advice from heavy runners with a high arch)

Hi guys! It's that time to buy new runners again. I am very heavy and have an extremely high arch. The last pair I got was a pair of Asics and they had that duomax built in arch thing, and I loved them. I also had to get mens as the females were very very narrow. I find it hard to find mens running shoes sometimes because I have such a small foot.

Now, here is my question. I am walking but building myself up to running so I want a really GOOD strong pair of runners. Should I stick with the asics again? Go Brooks? Or what type of runners do you recommend? I was looking at the Brooks Ghost, they look like they are built great. Oh! I also have supination (Under pronation) on my right foot (that was the foot I broke). I tend to move very carefully with that foot and I think it's a mental thing I did after fearing walking on it once I was out of the cast. I walk but when I step down I roll on the outside.

So, any advice would be GREAT. Just something with great support, good for a high arch and nothing too narrow (that would also have great shock absorption and cushioning for a heavy person). Since this will be for walking/running I don't care how ugly they are as long as they are great runners.

I'm a heavy runner with high arches and wide feet. I wear Brooks Green Silence (unisex) in wide fitting, which are sold as racing shoes but are incredibly light and comfy. There's also room for insoles of you feel you need something even squishier, but they seem as soft as many labelled "cushioned" without them. I've worn Brooks Adrenaline too, but I think they're a bit too supportive for my running style.

But never, ever take another runner's opinion as a guide to buying shoes. Get yourself down to a specialist shop and let them watch you run. Then, most importantly, try on lots and lots of alternatives until you find your favourite.

Meta-analysis of much research on the subject concludes that the best indicator of whether a type of shoe will help prevent injury is whether it is comfortable:

Hey thanks so much for responding. I will read that article for sure. Right now I'm not running but I'm building myself up to it. I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks to be at a light run walk and then a few weeks after that be able to run with very little walk breaks until I reach a goal of being able to run without breaks. I came here for advice because prior to buying the asics I use to buy shoes because they were "cute" but I would often get horrible arch pain. So, after finding that a proper fitting shoe can work wonders I just thought I'd come around here and see if anyone had any favorite brands for running. I loved my asics but they weren't enough support on my ouchie foot and so hopefully I'll find a pair that keeps it upright rather than me rolling on it so much and it hurting like it does.
