Only losing 1 pound a week, working my tail off?

I have been exercising 3 days a week with a personel trainer for the past 18 weeks. I have only lost 23 pounds, I feel like I should be losing more. I track everything that goes in my mouth, I stay at about 1,350 calories a day. I have 65 more pounds to lose and the thought of working as hard as I am and seeing the results be so slow is very discouraging. Any suggestions?

There are several possibilities. The first is that you are eating far more than you think you are. This is likely if you aren't weighing, measuring and accurately logging everything you eat.
Second is that you have put your body into starvation mode by eating far less than you're burning. If you're only eating 1350 calories per day, working out consistently, and you have 65 lbs left to lose, then you aren't eating nearly enough calories. Your body goes into starvation mode, where is does its absolute best to preserve every calorie you eat.
Third and least likely is that you have a medical condition that is keeping you from losing weight.
Of all of these, I think number 2 is most likely. You need to set your goal at 2 lbs per week and eat as many calories as MFP says you should eat. Eating less will not make you lose weight faster, it will just make you less healthy.0 -
Your doing well. Don't get discouraged. We have gotten a bizarre picture of weight loss though the Biggest Loser and other weight loss shows but those are done under extreme conditions with VERY overweight people. Yes it is hard work and is slow and you can do this.0

1 pound a week is a fantastic rate to lose weight. I'd say you're right there in the sweet spot.0

Thank you for your comment, I do worry about your second point. I have become obsessed with tracking my food intatke, I use a food scale and measure everything! I also walk a mile every morning and ride my exercise bike about 3 times per week for 3 miles. Maybe I need to add some calories (protein) and see if that helps.0

1 pound a week is actually normal. It's just a lot of work to lose weight....and often not a lot to gain it0

I am in the same boat you are. I have lost about 33 lbs and it feels like I should have lost way more by now. I know my problem is probably that I don't log as accurately as I could, so I am eating more than I account for. But at the same time I am viewing this weight loss journey as a lifestyle change. I haven't felt deprived so far during weight loss, and I have still gotten to eat the things I want to. Just try not to get discouraged and stay on track! Small changes, even that lb by lb per week, are what lead to the bigger ones.0

Sigh, If only I was losing 1lb a week right now, and I'm tracking and exercising like you... You go girl, you are doing great!0

If you have 65 more pounds to lose, why are you only eating 1350 calories? There's literally no reason for you to be eating that low.
There's also no reason for you to be killing yourself at the gym to lose weight.
As an example: I lost 70lbs about 8 years ago. I was only eating about 1,200 calories a day on average and killing myself in the gym every single night, trying to burn off the calories I'd taken in. I got thin, but it had some pretty negative health effects.
I kept the weight off for about 4 years, then in 4 years, I put the entire 70lbs back on and I dreaded the idea of going back to the gym and killing myself to lose that weight.
Instead, I found MFP and started becoming "obsessed" with calorie counting (by obsessed, I literally just mean that I bought a food scale and hit my calorie goal, without going over, almost every day). And I run maybe twice a week on a 5k program.
And in the past 4 and a half months, I've lost 45lbs.
I've never gone below 1400 calories, and when my "lose 2 pounds a week!" goal dropped me to 1400 calories per day, I dropped my goal down to 1.5 lbs per week which took it back over 1,600.
And I'm still losing weight ... with hardly any working out, and without starving myself.
I'd honestly just advise you to revise your goals and how you're getting there. Only eating 1,350 per day while doing hard exercising could be very bad for you.0 -
1 pound per week is good. I notice you are a woman over 50. Often hormonal changes can cause insulin resistance, and so you may benefit from increasing protein and lowering carbs.0

1400 calories is quite low for a man to be eating.0 -
I think you are fortunate to be losing a pound a week. However, I am not an expert at all, but you are not eating enough calories. Best of luck to you.0

Thank you everyone! it means so much to me that you would take the time to respond. It helps me to not feel like I'm on this journey alone. Best wishes to you all.0

23 lbs in 18 weeks is AMAZING progress.
You can't lose it a whole lot faster than you can put it on. Be patient with your weight loss. I would KILL to lose 1 lb per week.0 -
Ha ha, I should explain, I am female.. my login name is after my dog Rupert I'm 54 and 5 foot tall so I have a ways to go. I am the poster child for always putting everyone elses needs above my own and I just let myself go... I decided in March of this year it was my turn to focus on me and my health. It's been hard to put myself first but I do feel better, I have a very supportive husband who encourages me everyday. I know I need to be patient.0

Are you fitter?
Are you stronger?
Do you breathe more easily?
Do you concentrate better?
Are you more flexible?
Do you sleep better at night?
If the answer is yes to most or all these questions
Then reap off the benefits and allow the weight to fall
when it is ready.
You are doing a fantastic job so far.
Keep up the good work...:bigsmile:0 -
I think you have unrealistic expectations of how this is all going to go down...your progress is great...you didn't get fat overnight and you aren't going to lose all of the weight overnight. Put your expectations in check.0
