ok I make my own sweet tea by the gallon. I use 1 cup of regular sugar per gallon of tea...how many calories do you think is in an 8oz serving? I know there isn't any calories in the tea brew itself, but how do I measure my calorie intake for the sugar in the tea?

There are 16 8-oz servings in a gallon, and 16 tablespoons in a cup of sugar, so there should be one tablespoon in each 8-oz serving. Hope that helps.0

OK I found this website http://www.thedailyplate.com/
35 calories for an 8oz serving of MY sweet tea...LOL sometimes I hate living in the south.....NAH!!! LOL0 -
Be careful when you log your tablespoon of sugar, as I just found that one of the white sugars listed in the database says 15 calories for tablespoon, and it should be teaspoon. There are 45 calories in a tablespoon of sugar.0

Thank you! I wish I had sense I probably could have figured that out LOL Thanks again!0 -
Have you tried using honey to sweeten tea. I was raised in the south and love sweet tea. I found that I can add 2 Tablespoons to 1/2 gallon and it is good. To get southern sweet tea, you would add more, but could increase it 1 Tblsp at a time to make it good. Honey brings out a different sweetness than sugar. I really like it.0

I'm Southern too, and I love my sweet tea!
I use Splenda in my sweet tea (2/3 of a cup for a big pitcher or just a packet or two for a big glass of tea) and I think it tastes just as good as sugar sweetened tea. Not that the artificial sweeteners are wonderful either, but at least it's something you could try if you want to cut out the calories. If sweet tea with sugar is the thing you just have to have, maybe you could try making it with 3/4 of a cup of sugar or 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup Splenda and see if it still tastes pretty much the same.

773 calories in a cup of sugar. 128 ounces in a gallon.serving of 8 ounces.
773 calories of sugar divided by 128 ounces =6.0390 calories per ounces x 8 ounces = 48.31 calories per 8 ounce glass.0 -
I started drinking ice tea many (many) years ago ..... when the only artificial sweetener available was sacharine (blech!). Needless to say, I used real sugar (back then).
OP: see if you can gradually step down the sugar. Start with 1 cup .... then a couple tablespoons less, and so on. I love unsweetened tea now. I like to use flavored tea bags in the brew. Today I'm having Lipton Bavarian Wild Berry iced tea. Yum!0 -
There are 48 teaspoons in a cup or 768 in a gallon. There are 15 calories per teaspoon of sugar. So for an 8 ounce serving that is 720 calories per serving. There are 11520 calories in the gallon. Or 90 calories an ounce.0

Um, not quite They are only using 8 ounces of sugar per gallon tea not a gallon worth of sugar (whoa!) therefore the entire gallon of tea would only be 768 calories.0 -
Tea brew itself doesn't have any calorie, but my husband only drinking sweet if it's seriously sweet. About three cups of sugar worth type sweet. Here goes: One gallon, 8oz serving size. He normally has about 16oz serving size. How does I measure the calories of sugar per serving when it's three cups?0

Log the recipe into MFP......128 ounces = 1 gallon / 16 = 8 servings of 16 oz each
2 cups of sugar = 1,548 calories / 8 = 193.5 calories per glass.
I used the step down method many years ago. Start with your regular amount of sugar. Then add less (and less) each time. I drink unsweetened tea now.
Another option is flavored tea bags. I use 1 family size bag of Lipton & 2 (individual size) pyramid bags of Bavarian Berry to make 1/2 gallon of tea. The flavored tea bags make the tea much more mellow. Not berry flavored...just mellow. A mellow brew doesn't need sugar...or as much, anyway. If you like green tea....the Lipton Superfruit Raspberry & Gogi is mellow too.0 -

ZOMBIE THREAD!!!
I can't gif.....
Seriously....this has already been answered. 48 teaspoons of sugar in a cup....so multiply by 1/2 (or 24)....
128 ounces = 1 gallon. Divide by 8 = 16 (8 oz) glasses. 24/16 = 1.5 teaspoons sugar in each 8 oz glass.....log tea, log water, log sugar. MFP will do the rest.0
