gone to far?

hi, i started trying to loose weight about a year ago, it was more of a panic moment then anything when a work colleague mentioned i had gained weight (in a good way she assured *eye roll*). i remember going for the goal 1200-1400cal a day, since i read a body needed at least 1200 to live. but somehow within a week it ended up 1200 and below...and has been ever since. but that's the problem, i haven't had any physical issues as far as i can tell, i'v always had anemia and dry skin/hair, and haven't lost my period. but, i'm a dancer, and i saw a photo of myself from my last show and didn't recognise me, i looked ill, but that makes no sense as i look fine in a mirror. but photos look rather, well...not right.

i'v never had an eating disorder, and i'm in my mid twenties, eating disorders only really effect teens or those with high hormones so i doubt i have anything like that. but i just want to know, whether you guys think i may have gone to far?

p.s. i'm 5ft 9" and was around 9st10 a year ago...i haven't measured myself since, but i have lost an inch or two all over my body. so it's not a huge loss really quickly.

  • Just throwing this out there, eating disorders can affect people at any age at any hormone level.

And if your so worried about your eating, then start eating more.

I thought the same thing reading this; eating orders don't only hit people of a certain age.

Thinsports, it's not as simple as "start eating more." EDs are mental issues with physical problems.

You don't need to be a teen or hormonal to have an eating disorder. If you look ill than I would definitely reach out and get help.

Photos I've felt always give me a more realistic look than a mirror. In a mirror you see yourself flipped and it has this weird affect on the brain somteimes, vs an actual picture. If you look ill, either you are, or you're not seeing yourself correctly. Either way, those could be the start of disordered eating and habits. You can be any age and any "hormone level" to be effected by that. If you're scared of it, then maybe you should talk to someone about it.

Do you have a doctor? See what they have to say about your health. What's your BMI? BF? All other factors to consider besides just how you look to yourself.

For one, you were already towards the lower end of a healthy weight range to begin with, so I have no idea why anyone would have pointed out you had gained weight and in a good way, unless maybe you had been too thin before? Also, eating disorders hit people of all ages, there are women in their 50s and 60s developing eating disorders. It has little to do with hormones and is actually very common among those in the dancing profession. I suggest seeking help.

eating disorders can affect anyone. anyone at all: male, female, thin, fat, young, old... if you feel that you looked ill in photos, that's important. for you to always have been anemic, why haven't you addressed that in the past? i think you should have a chat with your doctor and talk to him/her about your physical health.

additionally, NEDA has a short quiz about disordered eating: https://www.mentalhealthscreening.org/screening/NEDA
