Help Grapefruit related emergency.

Made my morning smoothie with half a grapefruit in lieu of lemon today. Big Mistake. HUGE. It's as bitter as the Grinch on Christmas. (Pre-heart growth)
Any ideas on how to make it less bitter without adding fruit?

Sugar? Why can't you add fruit?

I have the physical ability to add fruit but I am trying to keep an even 3 parts veg 1 part fruit system going on. And it's 1L of juice so the amount of sugar I would need would be incredible.
My plan is to shave some ginger into it, my thinking is that the overwhelming ginger taste will take the focus away from the bitterness.

Perhaps. Personally I don't like ginger as I feel it is too strong of a flavor and would be worse than the bitter, but that could work. You're probably better off just adding fruit.

Could you add just a single banana? Banana is a strong yet sweet flavor.

Otherwise, I would add a bit of stevia. (ETA: Stevia is my sweetener of choice.)

I cannot help you with using Grapefruit in a smoothie. I would never use grapefruit in a smoothie. When I use vegetables in my juicer, I like to add carrot, green stuff and an apple for a little sweetness. The carrots are also sweet. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE red ruby grapefruit, but I prefer to eat it whole.

If you cut it too small, just push the flesh back... it's just a grapefruit.

Grapefruits usually have a bitter taste to them. Its not as sweet and citrus-like compared to the citrus family. Most of the bitterness comes from the skin of the peel. So how about juicing the grapefruit and using grapefruit juice rather than blending the whole fruit? If you do want to make your smoothie sweeter, how about adding honey or agave nectar?

find another way to add fruit- grapefruit is not something that is going to do well in a smoothie me thinks.

I've found that chia reduces the bitterness of grapefruit without sweetening it.
