Cutting out carbs

Hey, I am new to all this and was wondering where to start?
I am getting a lot of mixed information. A friend of mine has lost quite a lot of weight on a juice cleanse so I am probably going to start with that.
My question is carbs, after reading quite a bit I know they are bad for you but how do you reduce them? how much is a healthy amount to eat?
Thanks!

Carbs aren't bad for you and cleanses aren't good for you. You need to do a lot more research.0

Thanks for your reply. I know that you shouldn't do cleanses long term - this one is just 7 days
I have read that they are? apparently they cause you to gain fat0 -
Your focus should be on doing something sustainable for a lifetime.0

Yeah, you'll get a lot of different opinions on the boards.
Try to keep it simple. Set your MFP up and calculate your TDEE, etc. and find out what your calorie limit is, then stick to it. It's really as simple as calories in, calories out. Juice cleanses will not do anything. Neither will pills. Neither will any other fad thing.0 -

oh that's easy but I wouldn't lose any weight!0 -
Hi, if you want to juice do it for at max 3 days, then start eating mostly veggies and salads and greens and some fruits, complemented with some meats and grains, but over half of what you eat should be steamed veggies and lots of green leafy stuff.
Track it all within MFP, and set 1 lb per week loss, and I promise you will see improvements.0 -
Two things, one you don't need to cut carbs from your diet and you do not need to detox your body, it's perfectly cable of detoxing on it's own. There are some people who have success with low carb diets, but they still count calories.
If you want to lose weight you need to count calories, I don't care what you eat, how "healthy" it is, or how much carbs you cut you wont' lose weight if you eat more calories than your burn.
I got an idea, how about you lose weight eating all of your favorite foods. Try IIFYM (If it fits your macros) where you can eat all of your favorite foods with the condition that you are eating at a calorie deficit appropriate for you, and while eating at a deficit you work to make sure you are meeting your minimum fat and protein goals for the day, then filling the rest of your calories with carbs (or more protein and fat if you want).
Check out this guy's youtube channel, he explains flexible dieting very well and he doesn't charge a dime.

OK... sorry whats TDEE?0 -
I cut carbs because empty ones (bread, pasta, etc...) make me feel like crap. But carbs aren't INHERENTLY bad for you. You'll never cut carbs out completely because most every vegetable has them. Also, there's absolutely zero scientific proof that cleanses have health benefits. Just an FYI.0

Eat real food. Eat less and move more. I do not cut carbs, I don't do cleanses, I just watch what I eat, eat more real food and make sure I move! Walking/hiking is my favorite and something I can keep doing. It's a lifestyle change if you want to keep it off and stay healthy so start slow and change little bit by little bit.0

This is really the only answer you need to be looking at OP.
Carbs are not evil.
Cleanses don't do a dang thing.0 -

No. For weight loss, all she needs is a calorie deficit based on her TDEE...
For overall health, eating steamed veggies and lots of greens is a good idea.0 -

The first poster was right. Cleanses are BS, whether for 10 days or 10 minutes.0 -

Still, no - there is absolutely no reason to do this.I have read that they are? apparently they cause you to gain fat
No, they don't. Not unless you are eating too many Calories. And in that case, it's not the carbs - it's the Calories.

Start here: Calories in vs. Calories out. Period.
Juices are great, for the taste and for the nutrient-rich components, but I assure you, the weight will come back very soon after if you do not change your lifestyle and how you view food.
I'm not touching the carb comment, but suffice to agree with previous poster that you need to understand food a little better.
The real problem (and I can say this in all honesty because I started out over 200lbs) is that we just eat too much dang food!! What we want to eat is not the same as what we need to eat to be healthy. We need to make better food choices and MOVE OUR BUTTS more.
Caution: Most "cleanses" will cause you to be moody and hungry.
I really hope you do some more research about the right way to do this. Take it from this mid-30s girl who did crazy stuff to lose weight only to realise that it was a permanent lifestyle change that is what makes it permanent.0 -

Sure you would, you need to make different choices. You need to focus on long term not short term.0 -

^ This! Read the sexypants post! Explains BMR and TDEE and how much weight you should lose per week and all the other technical stuff. Figure out the right amount of calories you need to consume to lose slow and steady, then eat real actual food to reach your calorie goal. If you don't HAVE to do anything drastic and unpleasant, why WOULD you?0 -

I will definatly do some more research thanks. IIFYM looks interesting0 -
I'm a low carb dieter and for me that works well. But I'm not answering to advocate that approach. If you're interested there are plenty of resources on MFP and elsewhere to get you started. But on cleansing - the main advice I have is to help your body along in doing it's normal cleansing and drink plenty of water. If you're dehydrated (and most people are, even if they think they aren't); then you're making it that much harder for your kidneys to eliminate all the various toxins that go through our body on a regular basis. Those toxins aren't usually a problem if our body is allowed to do its thing and flush them away (literally). Our bodies are magnificently designed to deal with all that stuff. Just help it along with some water.0

If you want to go low carb, read this and go from there. DO NOT do a juice cleanse please. It's unnecessary and can be unhealthy.

Thanks for the comments, I am probably going to go along the IIFYM approach.
Just trying to calculate my calories0 -
There's lots of good calculators out there but no matter which calculator you use it's going to be an estimate at best. It takes trial and error to figure out your number.0

Cut on low-quality carbs and eat some HQ. On this link you can see why it's bad to cut carbs based on medical researches. http://www.precisionnutrition.com/low-carb-diets0
