What's a good low calorie snack?

I tend to get hungry around 12-1am and was just wondering: what's a good thing to munch on that won't ruin my diet?

I love string cheese for those moments. Any munchable veggie will also do the trick: baby carrots, celery sticks, sugar snap peas, etc. You can dip them in a little dressing or hummus if you have it in your calories/macros. If I really get the mindless munchy attack I'll eat breakfast cereal like Kix or Chex or Cheerios portioned into a single serving.

I recommend a handful (a small handful) of plain or even dry roasted almonds, they taste great, are low in carbs relative to other nuts, and satisfy the need to crunch. Good luck with the diet.

For me, Dannon Greek yogurt. It's 80 calories and it keeps me so full I could consider it a meal.
Pretzels, fruit, carrots, and cheese are also favorites :)
  • I've heard about doing this, but I'm not sure of all the details. What you'll need is egg whites, and some vegetable like green peppers or spinich. You have to put the egg whites in cupcake pans and put any vegetable of your choice in it. (Or any spices.) I'm not sure how long or what temperature they're supposed to be baked. When they're done, you'll have little egg white bits to eat. They are defiantly under 80 calories each. (Very very low.)
  • I have recently found out about the wonderful benefits of spaghetti squash. If you have time to do some prep, it takes about 30-40 minutes to bake, then mix it with something yummy like marinara sauce. It's delicious and low-calorie!
  • Grapes are pretty good for light snacking.

No wonder you're hungry you're grossly under eating less than 1000 calories some days. Just eat some food

Don't assume that everyone is like you. Some people aren't able to exercise, are very small or have some other issue that doesn't allow them to eat a lot of calories. I'm sorry, but the whole "every person MUST eat 1200 calories per day or they will DIE" is a load of malarkey. A 4'8" woman with a tiny frame does not have the same basic caloric needs as a 6'5" man.

The only thing you've done with that comment is cause the OP to close her diary. Not exactly a win.

Mmmm, hummus! I never thought of dry cereal, I'll have to pick up some Cheerios or something!
  • My favorite quick snack is an organic brown rice cake with a chunk of light laughing cow cheese! 95 cals.

it kills me that I can pretty much house that amount of food before lunch- and my daily none workout goal is 1500..... today I had eaten everything I brought with me by 2 PM- I wasn't going home- at teh studio till at least 9:30... no snacks.

    it's heart breaking (FWP)

    ah well. Yes. I agree.
    EAT MORE.

but in terms of low cal snacks- I'm a popcorn fiend.

Also if you have a certain time frame you're hungry- like I'm ALWAYS hungry at night- then push food back so you eat more food later... I normally don't eat till 1 PM and then back load my day with food- nothing but coffee early on.

I tend to struggle finding anything that I would have considered a snack, that can be described as both "good" and "low calorie".

Nowadays, if I'm feeling virtuous , I'd recommend broccoli and cauliflower florets (raw) and a couple of tablespoons of salsa.

For me: baby oranges (clementines) if I need a sugar hit, nuts (but as said above, measure, measure and measure again) - even salted peanuts work for me, as a small portion (10g) makes me feel full - and olives. If I keep those in the cupboard/frige, I can usually live.
If I'm treating myself, savory popcorn works well. It's something you can share a bag of with friends without completely wrecking your daily count.
I always always have a big glass of water with, in case I'm really thirsty rather than hungry. If I'm at home, I'll maybe have some fizzy water when I want a snack, wait 20 minutes and see whether I still want one.
    Hope that helps
