Protein: The Mystery Revealed

I have heard many many proponents of a high increase of protein when introducing a lifting program into ones excercise routine, or when working out/running lots. Well, I learned in my weightlifting class today. this is completely unneccasary. Let me quote from "Dynamics of Strength Training and Conditioning" 3rd Edition written by Gary T. Moran Ph.D, M.A., FACSM and President of Biomechanical Analysis and Research, University of San Francisco and George McGlynn, Ed.D., M.A., University of San Francisco (in case you were wondering if said information is legit...)
HERE IT IS::::
> "As for energy derived from protein, you BURN AS MUCH PROTEIN READING A BOOK AS YOU DO RUNNING TRACK AT TOP SPEED. The body burns protein for ENERGY only in starvation."
"Ok, you say. So if I'm not pumping iron, I don't need extra protein. But I'm body-building, I need extra protein, right?
Wrong.
"Athletes generally do not need additional protein, but additional calories in the form of complex carbohydrates to provide energy for muscle activity. Most athletes already consume TWICE as much protein as they can use and probably are wasting about half as much as they eat" [before introducing a "super-protein" diet high in the nutrient...]
"It is impossble to force extra amounts of protein into the muscles just by eating more."
"The so-called "super-protein" diets are unnecassary, expensive, and in some cases harmful. For example with large amounts of protein, the blood level of uric acid may increase and damage the kidneys and make the joints more susceptible to injuries."
I found the information useful, I was under the misconception that increasing protein would be beneficial, when I don't really do much lifting. Hope it helped ya! :happy:

hmmm...... makes me wonder about post-workout recovery drinks now. Mine has a lot of protein in it. Does your book say anything about that in there?0

Great post! It's true - we don't need as much protein as the protein-sellers would have us believe! I mean, think about it: have you ever heard of someone seeing a doctor or being in the hospital or dying due to protein deficiency? Nope. But there are lots of problems associated with TOO MUCH protein, just like you mentioned. One of several great books that talks about this is The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, PhD.0
