Weight Loss After Setraline / Zoloft

First time posting, but I've pretty much read all the stories out there in my quest to lose weight with/after Setraline. So why not add mine to the mix?
I started Zoloft (generic Setraline) about 2 years ago before my wedding. If anxiety meds cause weight gain is a highly debated topic - but I concluded for myself that it reduced my metabolism and made me crave carbs. Here's why:
I purchased my wedding dress pre-zoloft at probably 5'1, 112-115 pounds? I'm not really into scales. When the dress came a few months later after starting Zoloft it could NOT zip... at all. I finally weighed... 122 (waist ~25.5 inches) still in a normal range for me so I assumed I was eating too much. The dress was taken out, I monitored calories with myfitnesspal, and limited calorie intake in an attempt to LOSE weight. I did meal prep on Sundays to eat the right portions through the week. Plus went to the gym at least 4 days a week. And...
I didn't lose ANY weight, just maintained and at the time I just figured I didn't do enough to drop the weight. Even though I wanted to lose it was a success to fit into the dress. If you MUST stay on the meds try meal prepping and make sure to hit the gym. Maintaining is winning the battle with Zoloft in my book. Because this happened...
After the wedding I went back to my normal lifestyle thinking I would possibly fill out, but be healthy (I mean I did nothing before and was damn near 115 pounds). As the months went by I noticed my clothes started to fit more snug... and then I only really felt comfortable in my leggings... and then I SWORE I had to be pregnant because my stomach was soooooooooo bloated.
I went to the doctor for a standard check up. 144 pounds!!! Waist 29 inches - almost 30  :noway: . I nearly passed out on the tile floor. I gained another 20 pounds in just 7 months! Almost 30 pounds since starting Zoloft. I tried effortlessly to lose the weight while still on meds. I could only maintain. So about 3 weeks ago I decided to ween myself off safely as I'm over the quarter life crisis hump and I've found working out is an amazing stress reliever. (Although I recommend going to a doctor before quitting!!!).
I'm down to 25 mg and I can already tell a difference. I've been concentrating on weight training. Monitoring calories, but focusing on good calories rather than restriction. My waist is down to 26.5. I haven't looked at the scale for about a week at 140 pounds because I don't want to lose momentum. I'm sure progress will be slow.
But I feel lighter so don't give up!!!!!
And if you think anti-depressants are holding you back from weight loss talk to your doctor. I have a family history of cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure - all diseases improved by managing weight. My physical health at this point has taken to priority!

Definitely go to your doctor - I don't necessarily agree that physical health should take priority, aha. The 25 pounds I gained from psychotropic medication is very much worth the life that they gave me back (I would have offed myself last July if I hadn't gotten treatment). Don't ever be afraid to seek mental health treatment because you might gain. My psychiatrist added Wellbutrin (a SNRI) to my Zoloft (a SSRI) to help with a low sex drive and weight gain. After a year of that, I went off both. Now I am just on Adderall since my p-doc now thinks ADD has reared its head since I've conquered the depression. Now, that stuff is harsh on the appetite. I've lost about 8 of the 25 I gained in the past month.
Glad to hear you've figured out what works for you!0 -
Thanks for your comment. For me weight and physical health is more important as my mood has stabalized. For sure if you need It of course don't go without!!!! I was able to maintain weight with it just much harder. For me an extra 25 pounds is not okay to get through life especially if it causes more anxiety. Why not try to cope without the meds? I may try therapy if I get antsy again . Thankfully I've gotten passed an anxious period and exercise has been a far healthier stress reliever. Don't want to rely on drugs my whole life. And again I'm 100% my doctor would give me the same advice on weening off as I have done safely or trying another medicine which I don't intend to do. (Possible baby in the future?) Today I'm meds free, writing in a mood journal, and working out. thanks for reaching out!0
