Make your own 'Fast Food'?

I was just planning dinner and decided to make a "Nandos" chicken burger.

It's simply lean chicken breast marinated in peri peri sauce with salad (and bacon if i've been good earlier in the day) and I'll either have with or without the bun, depending on how hungry I am.

This got me thinking about the other healthier, imitation fast food i make for dinner (to stop me eating the real thing) I've been known to make my own chicken nuggets out of chicken tenderloins and homemade fish and chips (all baked not fried)

Does anyone else do this? Or does anyone else have other healthy 'fast food' they'd recommend?

I definitely do this with McDonalds egg McMuffin! Without the ham because I don't eat red meat or pork. SO good and much more healthy! I'm curious to see what other people have made! Great topic! I'm on the west coast and don't know what Nando's is but sounds like a yummy sandwich.

oh right, I forgot Nando's was only Australian :) it's Portuguese-style flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken place, pretty nice. But very easy to replicate at home.
  • I am South Australian. I have never had Nando's haha :(

We have them here. I think.

My grandmother used to make her own KFC.

I do not try to copy fast food places generally. But. Maybe I will one day.

I've been taking little short cuts but I don't really call it "fast food". I'm the only one in the house that's eating "healthy". No one but me is eating fish so it's a waste to buy fresh fish (too expensive here anyway) and prepare it the way I can actually eat it. Cannot stand fish that has those tiny white bones all through it or tastes too "fishy". Have been buying packages of tempura-type (very light) battered frozen halibut filets or light coating of Alaskan pollock. Instead of frozen french fries that you can bake in the oven, I get sweet potato fries. I bake all of those things on a little tray covered with aluminum foil that I lightly spray with a low fat coating (BRAND NAME HERE: Pam spray). It's easy to bake and makes for a fast/easy cleanup.

I have a little digital food scale. Next to the scale are: a set of individual measuring spoons & measuring cups plus a small straight blade spatula for leveling off excess quantity.

Have been using this great program since November 16th and it's working very well for me.

Add me to your friends list if you wish. I also have SKYPE on my computer if you need to talk, computer2computer. TIME DIFFERENCE: Today is 19 Nov 2011 and it's 2252 hr. In Perth, it is: 20 Nov 2011 and it's 1552 hr.

I made my own version of the KFC Grilled Double Down. It came out just a couple of weeks after I started on MFP and really wanted to try it, so I made my own. :)
  • I make my own KFC twister, much healthier and also yummier! I never ever buy frozen chips or wedges, I always make my own (using one potato only) with one cal spray instead of oil and a little seasoning. A nice low cal treat with dinner!

I don't really try to copy fast food, but I do make "healthy junk food" for my family so they don't feel deprived of fast food. I do homemade burgers with extra lean ground beef (It's actually leaner then the ground turkey available in my small town.), whole wheat buns, fat free cheese, fat free mayo, etc. I also make pizza on whole wheat English muffins with chicken or turkey pepperoni, low fat or fat free cheese, and lots of veggies. If they want French fries or onion rings, I make them at home too and either bake them or use a healthy oil (Canola because its got a light taste and is high in Omega fats) to fry them.
