Athletic clubs?

So i was considering joining a AC and i was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. I want to meet more runners as doing it alone is getting very...well, lonesome.

I could join a beginners jogging club for free but i'm not really a beginner or i could pay £60 for a membership to get track, road running and cross country training with an AC...and then pay an extra £3 per training session, this seems like a hell of a lot of money to spend just to be social and meet runners.

What kind of people join AC's are they young or old or mixed are they very serious runners or just doing it for fun and fitness. I don't know very much about them so if any of you guys have had any experience of how things are run it'd be great if you could let me know! thank you

Are there not running clubs where you live? Instead of a whole athletics club?
