When New Walmarts Open, People Get Fatter

I haven't looked at all of the methodology, but the headline caught my eye!

"One of the study's authors says the root cause is both the low cost of food at Walmart and the quality of the food sold there.

"I think the most obvious story is that Walmart lowers the price of foods and a lot of the foods it has big price advantages on are the processed, inner-aisle types of food that aren't that good for you," explains the researcher from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro."

While this may be true for any store that carries overprocessed junk food, and they all do, I do eery bit of my grocery shopping at Walmart and I have been very successful at weight loss. I do not buy any "fru-fru" organic stuff that I need from any top branded store like Target or Cub, etc. I buy whole foods, that are also found at Walmart, its just that people are ignorant enough to purchase an over abundance of cheap over processed food at Walmart or any store. I buy my fresh veggies there, as well as my Ground turkey and fish, and chicken, egg beaters, cheeses, and is always cheper at Walmart than any other place, so not sure why I would want to shope at another store.

I believe that businesses only sell items that have a demand. I don't think Walmart has an agenda to make people fatter - it's that people who shop at Walmart prefer to buy bags of 3 bags of Doritos, 2 bottles of sprite, and 3 candy bars. (True story, while I stand behind her carrying some mushrooms and a bag of walnuts.)

If people didn't want that food, trust me, Walmart wouldn't sell it.

We need to start taking some self responsibility.

I call shenannigans on this one. People are getting fatter with the more sedentary lifestyles that they lead. Believe me, my mom had no problems helping me put on weight back before there were Walmarts in our area and we only shopped at local grocery stores.

Local supporting local business - but sometimes you just can't afford to.

But how will I blame others for my problems then?
  • This is a big deal to me, and when the topic of Wally World comes up, I always try to chime in and offer some input. Welcome or not :P!

I understand that people CAN make healthier choices and that we as a nation make a very big issue out of free choice. But I think the line of what is free choice and what should be mandated is pretty obviously perverted these days. Look at how public schools enforce a dress code in order to make some aspects of their environment consistent. They aren't limiting free speech, rather, they are trying to demonstrate that there is an order to how we should act and display ourselves. Somehow, when it comes to food, we just say "anything goes"!

Some foods should be regulated just the same way that alcohol sales are regulated. Has anyone ever had a car crash from over-indulgence of powdered donuts, as opposed to Capt. Morgan Rum? I doubt it. So, free choice over powdered donuts must be the rule?? I disagree with that. I believe that we should have free reign of what is healthy, but that free-reign ends at the point of over-indulgence. How much is that? Well....how many Snickers bars should a healthy person consume per day? How much alcohol can we take in and still get behind the wheel of a car? There must be limits.

So, where I am going with all of this is that Wal Mart takes advantage of the weakest among us, and our propensity to NOT do what is best for our bodies. Sugar provides us with similar feelings that illegal drugs and alcohol promotes. It takes HUGE quantities of sugar to get there, but that's exactly what some people take in. And it becomes a matter of national and personal health. And our healthcare system is currently paying for the abuse of these foods.

yes, we all have a choice. But some of us need to be protected from our "choices". That's why we have condoms, legal drinking limits, recommended dosages, prescriptions, etc, etc, etc....

Have you considered the quality of the meat and produce at Walmart. Ugh. I REFUSE to buy meat or produce at Walmart - only the cheap stuff when I need it (like tolieteries, etc). And since I've switched to eating healthier, I primarily shop at Sprouts for meat/produce and supplement what I need at Safeway/King Soopers.

We had a huge renovation at the local Wal-Mart.. and I hadn't shopped there much BEFORE this, but I refuse to step foot in it, since. I'm fortunate enough to be able to put my money towards local businesses... and I'm also very fortunate that we have a local farmer's market that has SUPER-cheap produce, which is locally grown, and beautiful. My meats and breads come from a locally-owned store, and I feel better supporting my own town's economy.

That being said, and also being irrelevant to the topic at hand- Guns don't kill people. People will people. Cheap junk food doesn't kill people. People buying cheap junk food and snarfing it down while simultaneously ignoring a healthy lifestyle, kills people.

The products that I buy at Wal-mart are the exact same products I buy at local grocer--just cheaper. Jenni O turkey! Purdue Chicken. Albeit yes, fruits and veggies, especially veggies are not always the best, but I pick through them and if I am not satisfied I don't buy them, but for the most part I have no real big issues with them. One week I went and the fresh zucchini was mushy, so I did not buy any-simple!

I don't shop at WalMart because I don't agree with their principles, and I'm not too keen on making the richest company in the world even richer. End of story.

Okay, I'll chime in now...fwiw, I am not a Wal-Mart shopper, nor will I ever be. Even when I was scraping by as a poor student.
I wholeheartedly agree with mr_ashley and jessieinblue, but I also agree that Wal-Mart doesn't necessarily have an agenda to make people fatter -- they may sell crappy food but they also sell almost everything else in the world, too...

That being written, I also don't think Wal-Mart would give two sh*ts if there was empirical evidence that they were directly related to it, either. Alas!

/// Wal-Mart Shifts Strategy to Promote Healthy Foods

    By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
    Published: January 20, 2011

WASHINGTON — Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, will announce a five-year plan on Thursday to make thousands of its packaged foods lower in unhealthy salts, fats and sugars, and to drop prices on fruits and vegetables.

Michelle Obama, the first lady, has joined the company’s effort to get consumers to eat healthier foods.

The initiative came out of discussions the company has been having with Michelle Obama, the first lady, who will attend the announcement in Washington and has made healthy eating and reducing childhood obesity the centerpiece of her agenda. Aides say it is the first time Mrs. Obama has thrown her support behind the work of a single company. ///

People get dumb-er when new walmarts open.. is it why they get fatter?
I just buy at walmart whatever I would buy at any other grocery stores.
Usually I buy Walmart brand if it's cheaper (no salt tomato can, frozen veg).

Unfourtunatly, some of us don't have other options to choose from. The local grocery stores have all gone out of business and I have at least 5 Walmarts in a 40 minute raduis. There are a few HEB's but that is it. I shop the outskirts of the store and only get a few things from the actual isles. It's all about reading the labels. I fee a large family and have a budget. I can get much more at Walmart then at HEB, I just have to make sure I am making healthy choices.
  • I wonder if their is a forum on the internet that doesn't have a Walmart is Evil thread. :(
