messed up metabolism

I'm 18 6'3 275 and I think I jacked up my metabolism. Ever since 16 I been trying to lose weight fast after eating tons of junk food and gaining 20 pounds. The weird thing is , is that I still wear the same size shirts I wore before the weight gain & my pant size only increased 2 inches. I would eat 1200-1500 calories per day and only drink water. No juice, soda, or nothing. I weighed everything I ate and never snacked. I wouldn't even have breakfast or lunch at school and I never binged in food either. I never lost any weight. I would workout/run in the morning followed by long intense 3 hour practices and my weigh wouldnt go down. I remember one day after a long practice I would go to a YMCA and run even hard for 30mins 2.2 miles on the treadmill. I would have a snack afterawards and pass out on my sheets. The next day I weighed myself I gained 3 POUNDS. This makes no sense. My blood work is normal also. I really think I messed up my metabolism because if I eat 2000 calories I start gaining. I don't overestimate anything !!! help ?

OK at 275 lbs there is no intensive diet that will get you to where you want quickly; I think you need to come to terms with that.

I've seen 6'3" guys from 175 to 230 being a healthy weight; that depends on frame size and how much muscle is on the of course. I'd say you would probably be looking at a 50+ lb loss. Do you know your body fat %? I wouldn't be surprised if you have been feeding your body lean mass with the exercise you are talking about.

Also, did you get a full panel? "Blood work" can mean anything from cholesterol & pressure all the way to the kitchen sink. Unless you saw a 4ish page report that broke down everything from the stray calcium in your blood to the size variance of each of your white blood cell types it wasn't a full work up.
  • I got a blood test on my thyroid and it came back normal. What should I do?

Again, I have to stress what test. The standard test for the thyroid is a free T4. Did you get a yes/ no response? Did you get a number and range?

Basically, you need a GOOD test to find out if you actually have thyroid issues. T4 is the inactive form of the hormone. You also need to get tested for your T3 levels, TBG levels, cortisol levels and homocysteine levels. If you get those those 4 tested plus your T4, then you can rule out a thyroid issue with very high certainity.

If you are in the position to get blood testing, please consider visiting a dietician and getting a bmr breathing test. That should nail what you need to eat.

You didn't mess up your metabolism with some sporadic dieting at 1200-1500 calories. You gained water weight from over-exercising and you did so much, so fast, you had no patience.

Have you tried eating at a moderate deficit for several weeks at a time, with no marathon exercise sessions?
  • i really have no idea. sorry for responding late. I just called them and they said it was normal. they didnt give me a range or nothing
  • wasn't sporadic. been eating consistently at 1600 calories for a year.

You can't mess up your metabolism that bad. If you are gaining you are eating too many calories. It really is that simple. Just find out where those calories are coming from.

Ever consider that you're starving yourself? If you work out too much and then you don't replenish at least some of those calories your body is going to hold onto that weight and water as much as possible. Other option is that you're eating way more than you think you are.

If you're really only eating that many calories you should be losing weight though. :/ I mean I eat 1200ish and I'm a 129lb girl....

You could open your diary to let others see what foods you're eating, if you're still filling it out too.

Whatever method you use to estimate your intake at 1600 is most likely the problem.

Sorry, but you weren't. Even if you had a metabolic disorder, unless it was profoundly severe, you simply would have lost weight eating 1600 calories for a year, exercising like you said. Either physics is wrong or you calorie count was. I don't mean to be harsh but what you are describing is simply not possible. You are either very poor at counting calories (studies show most humans are), you are not weighing 100% of all your food and are doing lots of estimation, you are unconsciously eating and not accounting for it, you are remembering poorly, you are not being honest about binging/cheating (either consciously or unconsciously), or you have some kind of profound metabolic disorder.

If you are completely convinced that nothing I mentioned was happening and it is the metabolic disoder (which would be a one in a million type disorder) then I'd suggest you see an endocrinologist and have them order literally EVERY blood test imaginable. Full thyroid panel, not just a free t4, testosterone panel, comprehensive metabolic panel, vitamin/mineral levels, etc. If all that comes back normal then 1 of 2 things is the issue. 1, you were indeed doing one or more of the things I mentioned above, 2 your body is not bound by the laws of physics.

Water weight, even on starvation level calories, would have been lost over a years time. If a stall lasts over a month, it's not usually water, it's usually overeating be it from inaccurate counting, unconscious untracked eating, or unreported cheating/binging again conscious or unconscious).

So I'm guessing OP that you're just going to make another forum topic in two days because you don't like people telling you to use the function of this site to log your food to verify that you're not eating too much. Weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint. If you're not truly willing to do some learning and put in the long term effort, you're highly unlikely to see any satisfying results
  • Makes no sense though. When i was 13 I lost 25 pounds easily and i didnt even count calories. That was 5 years ago. I'm now 6 inches taller and 50 pounds more doing more exercise now than I did then and nothing gives. I'm always hungry.
  • been researching online since late 2012. my teammates lose 10 pounds without any change in diet. Our coach stresses we eat even more to maintain our weight but im eating less and i wont lose. I'm not trying to be ignorant at all. I rarely eat. People my size with my activity can lose around on 2500-3000 calories. If i binge i dont even eat near that.

You are not them, You are not you from "before" you are you now. If you are convinced that your metabolism is shot ask a doctor to test it. If they give you a clean bill it is miscalculation on YOUR END. Period end of discussion close book throw away key end of line.

Btw the likelihood of you having a metabolic disorder this severe and noticing no other ill effects for a whole year is basically zero.
  • so what are you implying ?

after school and practice i only eat 2 pb&j sandwiches with water then i go to bed. no overestimation there. no snacks. i have a good memory. my gpa is a 4.1. school is not based off of actual knowledge but memorization from books you study from.

I don't know why you were dieting as a CHILD, but who knows there may have been an appropriate reason for that. Now you're an adult. Be patient. Get the data. Then let's look at it analytically.

This was something I thought about earlier when I saw your post but it didn't really feel necessary then: Look, buddy. You're 18. You'll likely live to be a hundred. Spend the month. Weigh and log every damn solid and thicker liquid you eat. Use measuring cups for only freely pouring liquids suck as milk. When you still haven't lost weight in six weeks, either update one of your topics or create a new post with an OPEN diary. And guess what since it's been three days to since your original post and you created a new "so confused" post, I expect to see three days of accurate logging. Do you have it? If not, you need to reevaluate your true level of interest in using this tool and decide if you want to do it.

People who weigh a lot don't have to eat tons of food - volume wise. They just have to eat lots of calories. Read post four here, we usually give suggestions like this to people who have trouble eating enough calories but can't fathom having to choke down even more food
