    Its possible to exercise even if you are chair bound. Google Chair bound exercise and see which ones you think you can do. Also check beforehand with your health professional to make sure the exercises chosen are ot going to aggravate any existing health condition. Good Luck & well done for taking the first move to attaining fitness.

    I am not trying to be mean. I really want to be as helpful as I can. As the title of your post is "to heavy to exercise" I am going to make the assumption that you are morbidly obese. What I can suggest as a beginning is very strictly monitor what you eat. In the beginning you could do exercises such as arm circles or leg lifts. Even if you can only do them for 30 seconds at first or only lift your legs an inch in the beginning. We all had to start somewhere. I wish you the best of luck and good on you for wanting to make a change!

    i think richard simmons makes an exercise video that allows you to sit during the whole thing. might want to give something like that a try. good luck!!

    there is always upper body exercises you can do like arm circles, or lifting your feet onto a short aerobic step, anything that moves you is exercise

    Cable providers offer excercise on demand channels that offer programs for people of all abilities. If you have cable or satellite it might be worth lookig into. Normally they are free services.

    I agree with the above poster, there are many chair exercises that you can do that will help you along your journey.Any type of physical activity will help even the ones sitting down for now, it's a start and you have to start somewhere. Please don't give up! We are here for support and motivation 24 hours a day! We all need as much as we can get.     I found it difficult to exercise when I started until I found Aquafit. Being in the water allowed all of the stress off my joints and within a few weeks I was keeping up with the class.

    I was told by my bariatric doctor (obesity specialist) that if you can't exercise to start, make sure to watch the foods you're eating. Make sure they are balanced. Maybe it's worth seeing someone like that or a nutritionist to get you started and make sure that what you are eating will help you quickly lose as much as you can so that the exercise will start next.

    I also wanted to add that you could use a resistance band while sitting down. I saw some exercises online using one while sitting in a chair the entire time. Not that hard and still burns calories. Hope this helps.

    There's no such thing as too heavy to exercise. Yes, it limits your mobility and yes it is rougher on the joints to do high impact stuff, but you can still exercise. Most extremely overweight people can still walk, but may have to limit their time walking due to the stress of carrying that much weight around, but there are other exercises you can do besides walking. Pilates comes to mind first and foremost. A lot of Pilates work is done seated or laying down and lifting the arms and legs. You can sit in a chair and do various weight, band, or other resistance exercises. You can sit in a chair and throw punches to elevate heart rate. You can ride a recumbent bike (the one with the back rest) or use an arm bike to lessen the amount of weight having to be moved for the exercise.

    I've worked with various clients over the years in the 350-450 pound range and I had to show them that they are capable of doing a lot more then they think they can. Just think about it for a second. At that weight, just getting up and down out of or into a chair is squatting more in body weight then a lot of gym goers usually put on the squat bar. Just being that big and doing the activities of daily living has increased their muscle mass. I've actually worked with obese women who have more lean body mass then some body builders because of that. The key to exercise at that size is to tap into the strengths you have to overcome your weaknesses. If walking for 5 minutes leaves you winded and the knees hurting, then go for 2-3 minutes and sit down to do some resistance training which is easier for you. Then once you've caught your breath, get back up and walk 2-3 more minutes. Slowly but surely, you will improve those walk times, lose weight, and feel better.

    You CAN do this! So, don't let your weight get you down. Just move. Every movement counts!

    A couple of years ago our local paper featured a man who weighed almost 700 pounds when he started his weight-loss journey. The first day he "exercised", he got to a sitting position and lifted his legs out straight 8 or so times, and did the same with his arms, and was exhausted. After he lost about 50 pounds, he was given a treadmill. The first day on it he walked for 30 seconds and went back to bed. Long-story-short, after 3.5 years he weighed 245 and exercised almost 3 hours every day!

    I also have trouble exercising because my feet and knees are in terrible shape. I usually work with a balance ball and I also do chair yoga using videos from the internet.

    maybe there are some appropriate games for the wii that would involve sitting but moving your arms enough to raise your heartrate? I also agree with the suggestions of arm workouts, resistance bands, chair yoga and especially for aquafit (i took it when i was pregnant with both of my boys and there were several morbidly obese women in my class)
