Am loving this site (and mobile app) but am really struggling with an understanding...

I'm 159cm and weigh in at 80kg and have never had to diet in the past as up until 2 years ago I'd always weighed around 55kg (even after having my son in 2003 I dropped the weight without doing anything).

I put it down to age, having turned 40 last year, I've had EVERYTHING tested and medically there is nothing wrong!

So now I'm on a mission to lose 20kg!!! OMG - how will I ever do that??

Can someone also explain BMR??
Thanks in advance to my new found friends...

BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate. If you were to do absolutely nothing other than function for 24 hours, this is the minimum number of calories that your body needs to function and carry out it's normal activities. As you get older, this number decreases as the metabolism slows down.

Although there are calculators, remember that the calculated number is just an estimate. It's different for every individual depending on body composition, nutrients eaten and medical conditions or drugs that might affect the metabolic rate.

One day at a time. that is how you do it. some days it will suck and you will feel down.
some days will be great and the sky is the limit.
    that is the truth…
then one day the great days start to out number the sucky ones.
then on that special day with no warning it happens.
you look in the mirror and you fall in love…
    not with your weight
    not with your looks
you fall in love with yourself
you become proud of the hard work you've done
you realize you can do it
    you can do it anything
and the realization that nothing will ever stop you
this is a life long war
and you have won the first battle
    you took the first step…
    I am proud of you
    welcome to the club!! :)

BMR is your Basal Metabolic Rate. It's how many calories you would burn if you were to lie still all day and do nothing. Kinda like if you slept for 24 hrs.
BRM + 20% of that for walking, talking, laghing, blinking, flirting or what ever = your maintenance calories. That's the number of calories you would eat to maintain your weight.

    Hope this helps.

Read anything and everything you can to get educated on this stuff. It's pretty cool.
  • Welcome to MFP!!

BMR or Basal Metabolic Rate is used to calculate the amount of calories your system needs at this time to maintain it's current weight in a constant 24hr state of rest. Essentially, this means the amount of calories quoted when calculated determine how much you need to "take in" to maintain where you are weight wise right night without doing anything.

Once you know this number you can plan how to cut your intake to loose weight.

    For example:

The BMR calculator calculates thay you require 2000 calories a day to maintain your weight without activity.
You want to loose, let's say 1lb a week, in order to accomplish this you will have to have a defecit of 3500 calories a week, amounting to approximately 500 calories a day less. So your caloric allotment will be cut to 1500 to prompt weightloss.

    Hope this helps. :)
