Me too. Been here 2 weeks and the calorie/meal log is a god send. Already lost over 2 pounds. The first two weeks it was about controlling hunger and staying motivated to exercise. I hope it is like quitting smoking where the first 2 weeks are the most difficult. I'm reaching out wherever I can to stay on track. Good luck!
  • You're in the right place! :) I have about 100 pounds to lose I haven't really set a goal. MFP will teach you how to retrain your eating habits. Cooking and planning ahead are your best options! When you're first starting off as a healthy-eating "noob" remember you won't get everything right, but progress is progress. Go to the mirror, take pix, weigh yourself. Put all your info into MFP and look up healthy recipes. I love making Turkey Chili and freezing it for lunches, etc. Planning is key, and good luck!
If you're an exercise noob also then you might want to take that slow so you don't outdo yourself too early and give up.

Welcome to MFP. We all have those moments that tell us that's it, I've had enough. Mine was about 40 days again when I saw a picture of myself and just cried. I managed to put on 30 pounds overnight and couldn't wear any of my clothes. This is a great group for support. Try not to think about how much weight you have to lose and focus on small goals first. I do better thinking I want to lose 5-10 pounds this month and try for that goal first. Take small steps like eating healthier, cutting down on carbs and sweets, and moving more whether it be exercise, cleaning house, gardening, or whatever. Also, drink lots of water. I gave up diet drinks and artificial sweeteners and was shocked how fast the weight started coming off. You can do it! We believe in you.

welcome to MFP; I reached my highest weight last October and managed to lose a bunch using MFP when I decided to take it seriously. Slacked off a bit the past couple of months but it's easy to get back on track if your mind is set to it. Add me as a friend if you need support

Congratulations for being smart and brave enough to do something about it! This is where it starts, welcome. :)

Do you have a specific diet or preferred type of exercise you'd like get started with?

Make sure you take pictures and track your progress (sometimes a picture will show you what you aren't seeing in the mirror). And measuring is just as important as weighing!

Bust out that determination and prepare to impress yourself and defy your limits!

    Start here.
Read it several times, if that's what it takes to sink in.

This (below the break) is completely plaigerized from bwogilvie.
It was in response to one of the many "help, I'm new & I'm not losing weight" posts.
If you're not losing weight it's because you're taking in more calories than your body needs.
Doesn't matter if you just like to eat junk food or your thyroid is wonky, you're eating more than you need.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, I'll refer you to three excellent posts here that will lay out an effective way to lose weight and discuss some of the pitfalls to which people are prone:

And I did a blog post about motivation & encouragement that you might find helpful.
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/MKEgal/view/2014-07-24-motivation-encouragement-680938

    Here's the basic outline:
    - Set small intermediate goals & celebrate every one.
    - Take measurements.
    - Take pictures.
    - Weigh yourself regularly.
    - Be flexible; forgive yourself.
    - Celebrate the non-scale victories (NSV's)
    - Don't make any food forbidden.

I weighed myself this morning and it's the most I've ever weighed in my life! A friend forwarded this website and I decided to start now! I have to make a change...if not now...when? Those first steps are always the hardest, but I'm tired of saying to myself "I'll start tomorrow or MONDAY. Well that's how I got myself to this weight, to many tomorrows and not enough today's! So I'm officially starting my journey to weight loss today! Good luck to all of you! We can do it!
  • Just started using MFP about 3 weeks ago myself. So far so good. The mobile app. makes it easy to keep your food log going. I was just like you, I had reached a point where I said enough is enough, I've got to do something about this. Good luck to you!
  • make small goals for yourself... the hardest thing to remember is that you didn't gain all the weight in one day - and you won't lose it in one day. set small goals for yourself - think to loose those first 10 lbs - then you can reward yourself to shop for a new shirt for your new sexy self!

First - you must be prepared to be very, very patient. Losing weight can take a lot of time. If you're like most people, the weight will go up and down, seemingly with no rhyme or reason, or it will plateau for weeks at a time, even if you think you're being good.

Secondly, with the first point in mind, learn what works for you. There are MANY ideas on how to loose the weight: calorie counting, carb counting, Paleo, Atkins, Nutrisystem, Weight Watchers, fasting, Ketogenic, and on and on it goes. Don't be afraid to experiment to find out what you can handle and what works for you. This isn't a temp thing - you have to treat it as a lifestyle change.

Welcome to changing your life on here! It's the best. My biggest, most sound advice is to not look at the entirety of your goal and just say, "Hey, I am going to lose one pound this week." Then make small changes...either measuring portions, taking a walk, cutting out one thing, ANYTHING. You'll lose that one pound and then do it all over again the next week...and the next...and eventually you will be your own inspiration. It's how I started losing without it feeling like an overwhelming task that I'd just give up on. Just one pound a week and OWN losing that pound. If you need anything, feel free to message/friend me!
