I'm 5'9 and about 30 lbs over weight. I was shocked to hear I was obese (not that I was overweight or not healthy)! Man was this a slap of reality & I needed to hear it. My Dr. wants to see me in 2 months and was told to drop weight/exercise, because my heart burn will get worse. I HAVE to lose weight, but I'm not sure how much weight to lose in this time frame. I want to be healthy & have a realistic goal. Any suggestions? I'm new to this site and want to maximize all the tools offered.

I seem to remember hearing that a pound a day is the limit--more than that could be too much at once... although that changes depending on gender, age, your starting weight, if you're just starting your weight loss program, etc, etc, etc. Personally, I'd say you should consult with your doc if you're really stuck, otherwise make changes to your diet and exercise routines that you feel are manageable for the two months, and be sure to clarify with your doc what his/her expectations are at your next meeting.
Welcome, and good luck!!0 -
The 1 or 2 pounds a week is probably your best way to keep healthy, and help the weight stay off long term..0

I'd aim for 10 pounds in 2 months. It's doable but reaching just a little bit.0

Well.. MFP suggests not to lose more than 2lbs per week any more than that is considered unhealthy. So in 2 months if you lose 2lbs per week you will be at around 16-20 lbs lighter.
I would suggest to stick to the calories allotted per day via myfitnesspal, drink at least 8 cups of water per day, and to exercise for 30 min at least 3 times a week.0 -
My goal is 1 pound a week. This is a life-style change, not a "diet". Yes, I want to lose weight, but, I want to be able to keep it off, and be able to eat healthier forever.
Now, with that being said, my "goal" is one pound a week, but sometimes I lose more.0 -
That same thing is what started me on this whole thing i joined in the middle of october and have lost 42 pounds since then. I'm 5'9 as well but i started out at 252 i have 9 pounds till i'm overweight! It takes a lot of work but you can do it! i've lost about 3 pounds a week0

Your doctor told you that you're obese but didn't offer any suggestions or guidelines to follow in order to lose weight in a healthy manner? Sounds like a terrible doctor. At the very least, he/she should have told you how much weight you should lose in the 2 month time frame. Losing between 1-2 pounds per week is considered healthy and sustainable for the long haul. Welcome to MFP and I wish you the best of luck!0

Thank you all for your responses. This definitely helps! I guess I should've stated my weight. So I'm 5'9 & 188 lbs. I'm starting off with eating Lean Cuisine's to give me an idea of what I can eat & visualize the portions. I'm also doing cardio on the eliptical machine for 30 minutes. I'll try drinking more water, I usually only have 1 cup a day. Terrible I know. Thanks again so much!!
You all are inspiring me.

By most measurements, this is considered overweight, not obese!!0 -
The lean cuisines are handy but, really high in sodium and sometimes they really don't fill you up. If you check out on line there are lots of great recipes. I tend to eat a light breakfast of cereal/coffee or yogurt/coffee, Lunch is a sandwich or tortilla shell roll up kind of thing with a piece of veg/fruit or the progresso soups are lo cal too, I can eat the whole can 2 cups worth for 160 calories for lunch, then I make a decent meal for my family of 5 for dinner and I eat the same as they do, i just measure my portions, I spend a lot more time reading the package labels for the correct portion. In the past I would just load up my plate, now I take the 1 cup of vegetable, 1/2 cup of fruit, and eat mostly lean meats no bigger than my fist, skip the bread sticks/buns. I enjoy a low cal ice cream dessert (90 calories for Schwans ice cream lite bars. I feel really satisfied when I go to bed. (drink lots of water too this helps) another favorite snack is the 100 calorie popcorn bags, they are fulfilling too! Good luck!0

Agreed! If you go to the "Tools" tab up at the top, you can find a BMI calculator. Your BMI should be 27.8, which is not considered obese (obese being a BMI over 30). 27.8 is considered "overweight".0 -
agreed especially because i am 5'9 anything over 202 is obese not 188 you have 19 pounds to lose before you are considered healthy so you are not doing that bad weight wise.0

You sometimes can loose 10-20 pounds in the first few weeks.
If you are a person that retains a lot of water, you will loose that water weight, once your diet is changed and you start to exercise.
After that 1-2 Pounds a week is a good goal.
It's the most common goal and it's recommended.
But this will all depend on how hard you exercise and how well you eat.
And it will all depend on your metabolism.
If a person is exercising almost everyday and is eating right .
The weight is sure to come off way faster.0 -
Thanks for making me feel better and congratulations on your weight loss!0
