    You know what I love?

    When a tiny handful of schools decide to try something different and people act like it's the downfall of society.

    People who don't even live in the same country.

    "It has to be done in red!! My papers were marked in red and it made me the winner I am today!"
    its not the fact that they're doing something different its the reasons why. kids are so ridiculously sheltered these days, its going to cause some *kitten* in the future. this is just one step further in the direction of living in an over-protective society

    I think I've heard this same argument before.

    From our parents.

    And their parents.

    Etc.

    I can imagine our primitive ancestors saying, "What do you mean the 5 year olds can't come with us to hunt saber tooth tigers? This will be the downfall of our tribe!"

    I use only red ink for my job. The contractors wouldn't know what to do if I used another color. They'd probably think my comments were suggestions if they were in green. :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

    But that said, I don't really care what color they use in schools or why. I'm raising my kids to just roll with it when it doesn't really matter.

    thats a fair point. but i agree with our parents and their parents, even i think that i was subject to too much sheltering in my childhood. i couldve benefited from making a few dozen more stupid mistakes when i was young enough to afford them

    i guess its an opinionated issue but it just keeps getting worse and worse to me. like the price of gas, they were b*tching about it 20 years ago but its still something that keeps moving in the wrong direction

    eta; i know societal issues=/=economic ones but thats the comparison i made and im sticking to it lol

    First they took away grades in gym class based on performance and now we have childhood obesity.
    Now they are taking away the red ink so soon will have childhood stupidity.

    All I have to say is that if the generations before me think that my generation is bad then they better hope they all die off before they have to deal with the newest generation when they become adults.

    In a nutshell that's the one of the largest choices a parent makes. How much do you protect them, how much do you let them learn the hard way? I don't think there's any one right answer.

    I was not sheltered as a kid, very much a latchkey child. And man, I made plenty of mistakes. In a lot of ways I'm nothing short of lucky to even be alive. But I'm also fairly independent now.

    Either method has it's benefits and drawbacks. Each parent makes their choice. Nobody's perfect and nobody says "X is without a question the best way to raise children." We're all just guessing. One day you're having sex with someone you find attractive, next thing you know there are tiny people there who expect you to have all the answers.

    So, f it, maybe we try not marking papers with red ink. Maybe it helps. Maybe not. But I'm pretty damn sure it won't be the downfall of society.
    this specifically, no. but IMO its a stepping stone in the direction of making decisions that could be
    i agree with everything you said though, definitely no one right way to raise someone

    I'm not surprised, and then these coddled kids get out into the regular work a day life and cant handle it.

    We hired a 24 year old that was shocked to find out that he couldn't wear his ear buds when walking around the office. We also hired a 19 year old that quit when she found out she couldn't check her facebook every hour. (we allow it during breaks only). It wasn't just that we told her, it was that she resented being told, as that doesn't usually happen in schools.

    same here, we also had some that couldn't handle a 40 hour workweek. it was "too much" work. wait until they see busy season!

    ^^^ this is a great point. and based off of this, this could continue a trend toward increased pacifism and empathy. each generation becoming more calm and less rigid; more accepting. that is not a bad thing.

    those who cannot keep up with life in the real world because of this ink color change (really??) will be weeded out. natural selection. thank you charles darwin.
    when i was in school, however, the color of the correcting ink did not make a lasting impression on me.

    ETA: also, yeah, what's the ink you speak of? ipads and e-thingamabobs. duh.
