Food Dehydrator recomendations?

I am really interested in getting a dehydrator so I can make my own jerky, dehydrated fruit etc. Any brand recommendations as well as recipes?

I don't have any brand recommendations, but look for one with a build in fan. You don't have to rotate the trays as often, and food dries more evenly. Some pricier models have different heat settings for different foods, like meats, veggies, fruit, purees, and such. That's pretty nice.

Whole foods I just slice and dry, maybe toss fruit with a little bit of honey if you want them sweeter. Sometimes I puree fruits, or a mix, and try them for homemade fruit rolls. Careful though, it's easy to eat a whole thing, and the calories add up.

Jerky's pretty easy. I make deer jerky often, and mix equal parts soy sauce and Worcestershire, with whatever spices I feel like that day. Pepper maybe, or hot sauce, bbq seasoning is good too. Slice the meat a little thicker than 1/8 inch, and marinate in enough mix to completely submerge it for a day or two. I just cook it until it seems done, 8 hours give or take. It depends on the model. Some people like to add sugar, but I don't really get the point.

I have this one and purchased extra trays (which I recommend). I really like it. I only do fruits and veggies. Most frequently, I make kale chips. Kale, olive oil, salt & whatever spice I'm feeling.

Do an internet search for using the lowest setting on your oven, you may not need to buy one at all!

    Google 'Alton Brown food dehydrator'
(there is also an episode - maybe two - of his show 'Good Eats' that features his method)

He does it with paper air filters (the sort a houses heating/cooling system uses) strapped to a box fan with bungee cords. There are tutorials all over the net for using it for anything from fruit to jerky.
