sugar cravings

sometimes, especially around that wonderful time of the month, i get sugar cravings and an unbearably huge appetite that seems to not be satiated no matter how much water i drink or healthy foods/more protein i eat. is there really no way around it? i mean i don't go crazy but it's super annoying when my mind is telling me i'm constantly hungry.. though the constant hunger is usually only a couple of days before my period before it returns to its usual self. still SO annoying. anyway! how long to avoid sugar, for the cravings to dissipate? and how much sugar should you allow, is natural ok (fruits/unprocessed etc)?

Fruits and other types of carbs are great.
Go for a walk or work on a sun tan. Those things help me at night.

I have the same problem! I am addicted to sugar. I am trying to find ways to get away from it. I had a friend tell me that sugar cravings are a sign of a need for Magnesium. I have yet to get on a supplement but looked it up and it sounds accurate. I don't drink enough water and I think that would help also.

Sugar cravings are not a sign of a need for magnesium. I'd say the OP's craving is hormonal and she just has to wait for it to pass. yes eat fresh fruit.

If you are addicted to sugar. Stop eating it completely. Refined sugars that is. And don't replace with artificial sweeteners. you need to get used to eating food that is less sweet and these days most food is too sweet for health and causes you to want more insatiably.

Quitting is not hard once you accept the need for it. I have not had sugar cravings since i began my diet in January. I quit cold turkey. Just fruit for three or four months. Then i reintroduced some dried fruit figs and dates but only one per day because too many of these will trigger a binge or craving for more also. Just recently, 8 months down the track i've decided i can make sugar free desserts. Its an experiment. they are sometimes high in fat so i make the position sizes really small. bite sized . But i often make strewed fruit which is lovely with greek yoghurt.

I don't even have sugar on my porridge oats. I gave up sugar in coffee years ago. I don't miss sugar at all. But i know i still like those sugary foods so i don't eat them. I have only a few special limited situations when i can eat dessert types sweets of any kind. But they are not pre-planned. And i can only have one serve. IF i felt unsafe with this i wouldn't do it. I do not eat sweets at home ever. The idea is to forget about sugar. Learn how to enjoy living iwhtout it.

Learn how to love savoury foods. Become a better cook of savoury and healthy foods.

Today i've had shakshouka for breakast, followed by yoghurt with banana and pecans.
Lunch was italian lentil soup and an orange
dinner tonight was deep fried felafel balls followed by caponata on 50g of spaghetti. Caponata is an eggplant stew.
I've had plenty of protein, a good dose of fibre, a few too many calories in total, nearly all my vegetables and fruit requirements. 5 + 2 per day. The only thing i'm not sure about is if i'ive had enough calcium. Some of these things are leftovers and the breakfast was the only thing i cooked from scratch today. Most of the other stuff was reheated.

My food is so much more yummy that it was win the past. It has taken me a fair bit of this year to improve my diet this well but i did start out the year by quitting sugar. You can all do it too and probably should if you can't control your sugar intake.

I've lost most of the weight i wanted to lose as well.

Also while a bit of sunshine is good for you, working on a tan is not advised. It is ageing.

i don't tan, i like my pale skin. plus i have super sensitive skin and a few skin diseases that i can't get too sweaty or hot/sun exposure. so i'll pass on the tanning!

and i usually don't go over my sugar intake, except for special occasions that is. and you are right it probably is hormonal, and i try to stray from loads of processed sugar during the time i want it. sometimes i eat dark chocolate though. i do like sweet tea, don't like sweeteners too much because of the ill side effects.. so it's limited sugar or none. hot tea is fine for me without sugar or honey, but iced sweet tea i can never give up. i live in the south and love it, lol. just have learned to drink it less.

i eat fruit daily, but try not to eat tooo much cus of the carbs. and i'm vegetable-aholic if there ever was one so i'm good on that. but i will take all of your suggestion into consideration, thank you so much for taking the time to respond!!

oh also, i eat peanut butter usually on a day to day basis (not a huge amount, like 1 or 1.5 tbsp) with half a banana or apple or celery, so is pb okay as long as it's natural? it helps me get a healthy fat in and some protein

Go to boots or any sort of health food store and buy some sugar free sweets. Some of them are only 9 calories and the butter scotch sugar free sweets kind of taste like chocolate. Just have some of those until your sick of that sugary taste and you won't want chocolate anymore.
  • I have the same, which is why I'm doing a 30 day no (refined) sugar challenge at the moment.

I want to stabilise my energy levels and not have a reliance on sugar.

I'm on day three at the moment, and I'm writing a blog if you're interested in taking a read.

Its been quite hard so far, and I've been quite tired but I'm upping my protein and hopefully that will help.

    Best of luck x

Sounds like your restricting your diet too much. How about eating some sweet things within your calorie allowance? If you stop trying to avoid foods or treat them as 'good or bad' you're less likely to crave them or see them as naughty in some way.

I try not to go whole hog with all the crazy cravings at that time, but do still up my calories to eat at maintenance. I've gotten tired of fighting it, and those couple days aren't going to hurt my progress any, so why not.

I do try to continue going to the gym, because it really helps with cramps when I do, but it doesn't always happen.

This is a good article on the time of month topic: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/380982-time-of-month-and-increased-appetite

With regards to sugar- cutting it out completely for about a month or 2 will help refine your taste buds so you don't crave it as much. You may get headaches, but in the end it's worth it. Then you do have fewer cravings and it's easier to ignore when they hit (they're not as strong). It doesn't really sound like you have too much of a problem with it anyway, since you mention it's usually around TOM anyway, but it wouldn't hurt to do.

I feel you!! Being tired is usually why I don't end up going... but it seriously does help with all those aches and pains... I don't usually have back pains, but the cramps are crazy, and I can tell that there's a huge difference in how hard they come on when I've worked out vs. not. I usually go in expecting to not workout as long as I usually do, and I take it easier too, but I find I end up working out the same amount of time anyway (though the intensity stays less... I dunno if this is for everyone, but I definitely can't work out at the same level when I have it)

i can't even do much cardio while it's that time of the month, i get too nauseous!! i do try some low intensity yoga though, to help with the back aches sometimes

What does varies mean? Give an example.
What were you caloric intakes for each of the last 5 days?
    You're trying to lose weight?

it ranges from like, 700-900, but i'm not too far off from what i need as ive checked and for my height can eat 1100 and be fine with a lightly active lifestyle. i dont do intense workouts and i do eat frequently, as i eat a lot of vegetables and a few fruits a day. ive been slowly adding in calories, and working my way up so i dont want people to think im trying to eat less. it's been hard. and yes i am trying to lose about 5 pounds, as i'm still in a healthy range for my height and have never been underweight. i would not be considered underweight for another 15-20 pounds..

Funny enough, I avoid yoga during that time... I'm scared of what might happen with all the stretching... lol... that might be tmi!

Good luck to you with getting your calories up to a healthier level! I'm glad you know you've got work to do and are trying to get there.

Maybe there's some helpful info here for you too:

I'm sorry but even though you feel this will be an attack it's not. There is so much wrong with that post.

First off you already know 700-900 is way to low so it's good that you are trying to increase it.
You are increasing calories but yet you still want to lose 5 lbs? Not sure how that even works.
You don't need to lose 5lbs. Your weight is low enough as it is. And it's pretty obvious from your profile picture.
Saying you would not be considered underweight for another 15-20 lbs is wrong. You would be severely underweight. Dangerously underweight.

Your post is pretty telling that you are not in recovery from ED, you still have issues with it. You really should go speak to a medical professional.

i'm an pear shape though, i've always had a thinner top than bottom, my legs are pretty stocky. always have been. got em from my momma. and i mean losing a couple of pounds gradually, by slowly increasing my intake so that i can exercise more and tone up. and i don't think it's an attack. and i never said that i don't have issues with it! i said im trying to recover and still have a long way to go

no i'm not, as my family does not know i have/had EDs, and i have no money or insurance for that type of stuff. and i am kinda stocky, i have thick thighs (which are both a blessing and curse, depending on my mood). but yea. i'm in no real danger, honestly. im in a healthy weight range.. but i didnt want this post to turn into things about my ED because now i'm likely to have half of mfp on this forum griping at me.

    but thank you.

Don't worry about other people griping at you- work on getting healthy. He's right that you probably do have body dysmorphia... it's hard to see yourself objectively...

Please check out those links I posted earlier and see if there's anything you could do to get the help you need. Don't assume there are no resources out there for you.

    Good luck.

You should really consider telling your parents because even though you may not believe it, you are in real danger. You are going to have a hard time getting people on this site to give you much weight loss advice as it's pretty evident that it's not right.

i'm not really looking for weight loss advice, not even on this post. i just meant alternatives to high processed sugar i crave!! cus that can get so unhealthy. i try to eat really healthy even if it's not as much as i should be eating. and i just have one parent, and he wouldnt understand and would blab and embarrass me so please understand that i cant tell him. my boyfriend knows fully well about it, as do some of my close friends. but my family.. they're very southern and already make comments about my body negatively so i dont tell them much of anything..

and i don't think i am, as ive been slowly increasing my calories over the past few months, my goal is to be okay with eating 1000 calories by the end of the year and work from there. it's fine if i gain a couple of pounds, because im increasing my calories regardless, it would just be nice to lose some of this thickness on my legs, lol. that's my main issue is my legs!

For most of my adult life I lived on caffeine and sugar. And I never, ever liked fruit. These past ten weeks I've eaten all kinds of fruit, and my energy levels skyrocketed. I wonder if all that time I was craving sugar and caffeine what my body really wanted for energy was fruit?
