Whole foods give you lots of micronutrients to go along with your macros, offer more satiety than supps, are cheaper, have better absorption of the nutrients you're after in the first place, and probably some other benefits I'm forgetting.
Supplements can be used to shore up specific deficiencies if needed, for example supplementing Vitamin D works well for some people (but bioavailability is still lower than getting real sunshine).0 -
I think of it this way: The nutrients and vitamins I'd get from a serving of broccoli, or salmon, or kale is there for the metabolizing in it's natural form. It's pretty much given that the majority of its nutritional benefits will be absorbed by the body. I can't say the same for supplements, at least not all of them, as there are some pretty crap supplements out there, with added fillers, sub par vitamin quality, and forms of it that are not as easily digestible and absorbed as natural foods.
TL;DR: Supplements are probably better than nothing, but I would try to fill up on as much real food as you can, first. That's why it's called a supplement, not a main course. :flowerforyou:
