picking habit

Picking is my biggest downfall right now.
For instance, when making lunch, I toss an extra slice of turkey in my mouth. Or when making dinner, I sample the sauce (over and over) The grossest though is that I pick at my kids plates (they are 3 and 20mo) eeewww, right?
Oh , here's another one....I made a low fat, low sugar, low cal desert last night...GREAT! if I had had the correct portion but I ended up licking the serving bowl clean (there wasn't much in there but that's not the point) I did this sort of in secret as I was cleaning up the dinner dishes and I felt ashamed of myself...yuck.
Think about it, depending on what I am picking at, I can tack and extra 300-500 calories (often empty calories) in the blink of and eye.
I can't imagine what it must be like to not have this habit. I have done it for as long as I can remember and I grew up watching my mother work her way through and around a meal this way. Funny, 2 of my 3 sisters (the 2 without weight problems) remember this behavior as well and say that it did and still does GROSS them out! Which is why they never picked (no pun intended) up the habit.
Anyway, I am writing....why am I writing about this???? I guess because its been on my mind but I want to stop the habit now.
I need some mental trick or some reminder to stop before I do it because it all adds up to calories!
If you can or maybe better yet, if you CAN"T relate let me know why and how it is that you don't have this behavior or what
do to curb the impulse.
Thanks - Britt
PS. When are they going to get spell check on these message boards....please forgive any spelling errors. Not my strong suit.

Before I officially committed to my program.... that was common practice for me. You are conscious of it now so just try hard to resist. I know you can do it. Just throw those plates and bowls in to the sink and begin to rinse. The desire to clean them will rinse right down the drain.0

I've started chewing gum while I'm cooking. It really helps to keep me from snacking.0

When I first started working in the restaurant industry 6 years ago I would go into the kitchen and pick at everything. French fries, soup, crackers, you name it. So when I started gaining weight from it I had to do something. I would throw a stick of gum in that way it is hard to eat with gum in. Get your favorite kind and keep it fresh by putting a new stick in when it loses flavor. This method really broke the habit for me. That and avoid the kitchen, only going when I had to, not hanging out there. Hope this helps.0
