Transformation Challenge - On the Right Track?

Hi All!

My kickboxing gym is doing a 45 day body transformation challenge where you can win up to $5,000 and I just signed up. The three criteria are: 1. Change in appearance 2. Pounds lost 3. Personal growth. Right now I am at 145 lbs (33 years old) and taking about 3 kickboxing classes/week (~500 cals burned in each) and doing yoga 1x/week. I'm hoping to use the challenge to jump start some weight loss (about 10lbs is my overall goal) and build muscle.

I have my calorie intake set on MFP at 1200 and then log all of my activity and food and aim to take in what MFP sets as my Daily Goal of cals, which usually ends up being about 1700-1800 cals when I workout. Over the past two weeks, I've dropped 1lb with the way I have things set up and, to be honest, I would have thought it would be a bit more.

I'm hoping you can help me sense check myself and hopefully help set me up for success for this challenge :) Am I eating enough? Have the right kind of workouts? Maybe add in some strength training?

Really appreciate any advice or assistance you can provide.

Thanks!
Ashley

10 pounds in a month is pretty aggressive. Setting you at "lightly active" (this calc includes your current workout) at 30% drop in calories from your TDEE would put you at eating:

    1372 calories per day
weight around 137 ish at 45 days.

Of course these are estimates - as ALL calculators are estimates.

Here's the calculator I used (I've had good success using this one):
    http://www.calculatorlab.com/HowDoIMeetMyWeightLossGoal/index.php#cutby20

If you up your exercise (maybe add 1 more day per week) at the calories above....you might hit the 10 pounds. Accurate logging will be very important (weighing / measuring everything).

Good Luck, and remember this isn't probably a good goal to hit every month, usually you want to eat as high as you can in conjunction with a good exercise plan so that you lose about 1 lb a week....but for you one time challenge its fine.

Aw Karen thanks so much for taking the time to respond! I agree that 10lbs in 45 days is a bit aggressive and I wouldn't set this as a long term goal. I haven't seen that calculator before so thanks for the link - I'll try using it as a guide.

Do you think that there's anything I'm missing from my workouts? I was thinking of starting to incorporate some weight lifting 1-2x per week just to mix it up a bit.

    Thanks again!
  • Yes definitely add weight lifting or body weight exercises......you don't want to lose weight and be "jiggly-wiggly".

    :)

Later (AFTER this challenge) you might want to look at some of the great weight lifting programs out there now. (one example would be) doing around 3 weight lifting workouts, and 1 or 2 HIIT cardio (around 20 minutes), and 1 yoga or stretch per week.
