No red meat?

I've decided to cut red meat out of my diet- I know that there are benefits to meat (iron, b12, etc.) but I eat fish and white meat and I feel like I can get all of those nutrients from those foods without all of the bad things in red meat. The only reason I'm nervous is because my mom has low b12 and my aunt does too, so I'm not sure if it is genetic.
What I'm wondering is, can this really hurt me? I've been a vegetarian before. I was a vegetarian for a year and a pescatarian for 3 months after that, but my iron was very low and I needed to put meat back into my diet for my health. If I do this the right way and get the right amount of iron and b12, can this do anything harmful to my body?

I'm unsure.. though, I cut red meat out of my diet about 3 years ago(except for a cheeseburger maybe 2 times a year) and I haven't noticed any changes that weren't positive ones...0

I rarely eat red meat (maybe two or three times a year) and I take a vitamin supplement every day. I've never had a problem getting the things I need from other foods.
If you're worried about losing those vitamins be sure you're taking a supplement and keep up with your doctor so they can check your levels.
Any place I'd use ground beef I now use ground turkey, it's super yummy and most people that I serve it to don't even know the difference!0 -
take your vitamins1 Or a B12 supplement. Not only is cutting red meat out of your diet a healthy choice(although anything is ok in moderation) it's also better for the environment too. It takes far more energy(gas, electricity etc) to process a cow then a chicken or fish.0

I agree! I do the same0 -
I agree with James. I stop eating red meat completely as of November and feel great! I do take my vitamins, along side my B12 (once a day only).0

I'm a pescetarian of 4 or 5 years.
Aside from being a fatty I've been fine health wise. I take a good multivitamin and eat lots of fresh fruit & veg.0 -
I rarely eat beef...maybe 4oz once a month if that. I take a b12 supplement I got from Wal-mart . Its called B-Complex with B12. Its a sublingual liquid. Doesn't have an odd taste or anything like that. I take it 3x's a week. I also take a multi-vitamin that has B12 in it.0

Alright. I think this made my decision. Pretty sure I'm cutting it out completely.
My parents are all for it because it's a health decision, plus, my family is very health conscious so we buy ground turkey instead of ground beef and turkey bacon instead of regular anyway. I don't think it will be that big of a change and I really want to do it for the health benefits.
Thanks everyone!0 -
I haven't had red meat in 14 1/2yrs...and I don't miss it..I take my vitamins everyday so that helps with the b-12...I get alot of my protein from other meat like poultry,beans,nuts,seafood...As long as you get enough daily you'll be ok...0
