I was watering the Planter Box in front of the house yesterday after work. Enjoying a good cigar. I see this person come walking down the street. He is walking a little funny. About that time my neighbor drives around the corner and pulls up into his own driveway. The person walking heads for Doug (my neighbor). Approaches hime, says something, then turns away. Then...he sees me and starts across the street. He's about 5' foot tall and I can tell by his gait and facial expressions that he is "mentally challenged". He says something, but his speech is affected by his condition. I can't understand him and tell him so. He comes closer and, concentrating very hard and enunciating, asks me "Can you help me get to Sandy? I need bus money or a ride."
I said, "Just a second, I'll get my keys."
So I took him to Sandy. About 35 miles roundtrip. I asked him how he came to be in my neighborhood. He said a friend picked him up and them ditched him. He'd been wandering around for a couple hours trying to get someone to help him. His name was Cody. He was 21. He's is going to be 22 next month. I stopped at a convenience store and bought him a sandwich and a soda. I dropped him off in Sandy. Told him he needed a new friend, because real friends don't abandon their friends. He, very sadly, said "I Know" and left.
I'm a little disappointed in Doug.
Anyway, how could someone do that to their friend?

unfortunately there are a few people out there that would take advantage of those less fortunate, and they still see these people as 'friends'. glad you were able to help him out0

Cody was very lucky that he ran into a guardian angel yesterday. Sadly, I'm sure he will not lose the friend that ditched him and he will be hurt again by that person, but I do hope that he will be blessed with better friends in the future.0

You're a good man.0

Thank you for sharing that story! We all know there are bad people out there who would ditch a person in need. However it's reassuring to know that there are also some good people left to help out!0

It sucks that his friend is a tool but you proved to him that there are still good people in the world. And earned karma points!
I applaud you sir.0 -
This shows your true heart! Thank you for helping someone in need. I have done this before and never regretted it. If I got the means I will help those who need help. This has also gotten me into trouble also. However, I will never stop helping those in true need and you should feel blessed you met this young man, you have made a small ripple in his life and hopefully he gets better friends from the experience and your advice.0

Looks like Cody found the right guy.0

This made me start crying. It makes me sad that there are people like his "friend" out there (and makes me wonder if it was some cruel @sshole that did it to him intentionally because he is different...)...but it makes me happy and makes my heart smile to know that there are people left in this world like you. Thank you and for Cody, I hope that everyone takes the opportunity to pay your kindness forward.

This is very sad but thank god for people like you. Good job! Whoever ditched him was nothing like a "friend." As for your neighbor, shame on him for just ignoring the situation. What kind of person sees someone in need of assistance and just does nothing.0

Dog: GOOD FRICKING JOB!
Sounds like Cody was a victim to a new prank that is going around. It is where someone is pick-up by some-one they hardly know (new friend) and then is ditched in an out of the way place.
I have seen this a few times in the last couple of years around here. Suppose to be hilarious joke to pull, in Cody’s place might be considered dangerous.
Both times I have seen it, it was a young teen (pre-driving age). We called their parents and I brought the person back to their house.0 -
PAY IT FORWARD!
Very inspiring! :flowerforyou:0 -
Thank you for doing this for him, and for sharing! I wish there were more people that would actually help.... Cody will remember you for a very long time :drinker:0
