I feel helpless to my addiction to food

I can never stay on track for more than 3 months at a time. I don't see results fast enough and I just give up. I know I didn't gain the weight over night and I know I'm not going to loose the weight overnight either. I'm at the heaviest I've ever been, more than I weighed 9 months pregnant with my son so I am disgusted in myself. I've gained 20 pounds since March when I started Nursing school, I used that as an excuse. This is my future career and I need to make a change for myself. I've had a gym membership since I was 16 and I'm 26 and fatter than ever. I'm going to use it, I'm going to use my fitness pal to count my calories, I'm going to make this happen!

If you've tried, really tried, over and over and continue to fail, maybe you should seek counseling for your addiction. Is this your first time trying calorie counting?

Don't mind me. I'm just here to watch the show that's about to unfold.

If you truly think you have an addiction, then you should talk to your PCP and then to a therapist. I think a website is not up to resolving an addiction.

If you are using the word to express your frustration, then just start logging for a week - all your exercise and foods.

You can do it! Remember, " Nothing ever changes if nothing ever changes." One day at a time and if you have a down day you get back up. You only fail when you quit.
  • Maybe I use the word "addiction" too lightly. I have self control and I do not think that I am at the point where I need therapy. Thanks for the input though.. I've calorie counted before and have been successful. I have just been under a ton of stress the last six months and I've used food as a comfort blanket when I am in stressful situations and I realize that I need to work on other ways to deal with stress.

Is there a difference in the types of food you are eating between when you're counting calories and when you aren't? Or is it mostly just a larger or smaller quantity of the same foods?

To really stick with it for the long haul, it takes more than just counting calories, but making healthy choices a part of your lifestyle. For me, I had to cut out most of the processed foods and junk food entirely.

In the past when I've tried just counting calories, but still ate rather unhealthy and processed foods, I always fell off the wagon eventually. I needed to be able to feel good about anything I was eating, and in turn eating better foods made me feel better. Now I love eating the simple, healthy foods, and the processed stuff almost makes me sick when I do eat too much of it :o

Wow that is so different from your original post. Good luck!
