Do certain body shapes "carry" weight better?

People consistently guess that I weigh less than I do, even now I've gained weight and trying to lose it. I've always been kind of embarassed about having a higher weight. I've had a 19 BMI at one point and people described me as looking ill and my face being drawn.
For women does your body shape effect this? I am definitely and hourglass type with a big chest, shoulders proportionate to hips, smaller waist and wide hip bones, as well as tending to carry body fat around the lower stomach, hips, thighs and chest. I can't think that boobs weigh that much though!
I'm probably not what anyone would describe as "muscular" so where does the weight come from?
Do pears/apple/etc shapes have the same issues as well?

Yes many people carry weight better than others.0

The above photos were progress pics of me at 256 pounds. I get told often that I look like I weigh a lot less. I don't know if that's because so many people lie about their weight that people have no idea what it looks like or if it's because I'm just very evenly proportioned. I would imagine that someone who carried ALL of their weight in one section might look larger than someone like me who is fat from ankles to nose!0 -
idk i think bodyshape does kinda have to do with it, because people always assume i'm under 100 pounds (im pretty short/petite anyway) and im not, i tend to carry most of my weight in my thighs/bum in general though.0

I think a lot of it is height. I am 5'9 and weigh 156lbs and people consistently guess that I weigh 130 which is laughable to me.0

I'd say there you look much less than 256lb. I think that a lot when I read success stories too. The "before" photos never look the weight they do when I compare them to myself. I'm just over 200 and I look much bigger than you in that picture.
But like someone else said, it's probably the fact of most people are very critical of themselves and see everyone else as looking fine/skinnier then themselves!0 -
Yeah I've been told this about myself too. I was extremely fat but people would say .. but you carry your weight pretty well because though I had quite the guy my weight was otherwise evenly distributed around my frame. I didn't have any particular stand out bits. I dunno maybe they where just being nice but i sorta see it. There's some people you see like men who look like they might be pregnant or something. And I was like geez glad I'm not like that.0

I'm the same way. I carry my weight better. I actually went down a ring size since losing 40 pounds because i really carry my weight everywhere.0
-
I've always carried mine well. Great for winning at those weight guessing booths...LOL. 5'7" at my smallest 130 lbs. I looked ill.
Heaviest weight was 258-262 lbs.
SW 215 lbs.
CW 187 lbs.
GW 155 lbs. << Healthy BMI0 -
My work colleague is about 8-10lbs heavier than me.... and 3-4 dress sizes bigger. It's because she carries all her weight around her middle, while I'm more hourglass shaped. She has skinny legs!0
-
Yes definitely. A friend is my size and 7 pounds heavier and look slimmer than me. I carry all my fat in my midsection and I have a larger frame so it's very obvious when I have extra fat on the hips... I have pretty much no fat in my legs.0

Stop having so many conversations about your weight... And stop worrying so much about what other people think.0

I'm 5'1 but I've always carried weight well and never looked as heavy as I actually am. Most also guess me as 4-5 years younger than I actually am also. It helps that I've got wide shoulders, as in every time that shoulder pad trend comes around I cut the pads out and it lays well on my shoulders.0

I think certain people can carry their weight better than others. I always gained in my tummy & chest & had relatively skinny arms & legs so I definitely looked my weight.--like a weeble wobble with legs. If I had more of an evenly distributed hourglass shape while I was heavy, my weight wouldn't have been as noticeable.0

People definitely carry their weight differently. I am a pear, a short pear, thus I tend to look bigger when I'm in season.0

Definitely.
I'm 5'6" and currently weigh 157lb (weighed 165 a few weeks ago). When I mentioned I was trying to lose weight, my colleague commented "But you can't weigh much more than 10 stone!" (140lbs).
I am technically overweight (not for long - 156lbs will put me at the top end of a healthy BMI!) but whilst I'd never be described as skinny, people say I'm "slim" and "have a good figure". I have pretty massive legs (large calf muscles from 20 years of ballet, tap and jazz dance, thighs are just fat!) and have larger than average boobs too. So although my waist measurement is larger than I'd like (30") I'm in proportion as my hips and boobs are significantly bigger than my waist.
A few years ago I lost a lot of weight due to working 60-70 hours per week, most of it waitressing. I didn't have scales, but I'm guessing I was around 145 lbs. People commented on how thin my face was and thought I looked unwell.
I'd still like to get down to 145 lbs this time, and hopefully by doing it healthily (not just by working all the time and skipping meals because I'm too busy to eat!) I won't look ill. But I'll reassess based on how I feel along the way.0 -
I don't know the answer to your question in general, but I have always carried my weight well. Even when I weighted my average 185 for years, people thought I weighed less than I did. Now that my weight range is between 139 and 142 (at 5 ft 4.5 in), and pretty much stays there, people notice muscle tone but also say I'm too thin. I don't think I'm too thin, but I am compact and small and I don't want to lose any more weight.0

yay for the hourglass figure. :drinker: I have always been a lot bigger than what people would try to guess and I am very thankful for that. I think a lot of my weight is in my fat calves. lol0 -
Basically the same thing others here have already said, but yeah.
OP you sound a bit like me - tall, broad shoulders and hips, weight pretty evenly distributed and so on. I have always been told I carried my weight well and honestly up to about 240 lb I do think that is true. Over that weight though, I don't think it was so great because I still have a relatively slim face/neck and forearms and hands, so I think over 240 I kind of looked like an average sized person wearing too much fat around my boobs, back, hips & belly.
My legs are long and proportional as well which I think goes a long way at fooling people to assume you're more like a size 18 when you're a 22, and so on. Although I think it also kind of works the other way when you get smaller, because at 5'8" and a size 10-12 some of my friends see me as so much "bigger" than them, even now that I am barely overweight - I just take up more space with long arms & legs and still have a bum & hips, they assume I am still in plus sizes or larger than them. A 5'4" size 10-12 lady still kind of looks like a way smaller person than me, if that makes sense, even though we can wear the same dress or shirt or even jeans (adjusted for length).
I am sure a lot of ladies who have responded here have had similar experiences...but when I would go to the doctor, and the nurse or tech would weigh me in...they would almost ALWAYS express surprise at my weight being so high. A lot of them would comment that I just didn't look that big (usually around 270s and once hitting 307). I really don't think they were ALL saying that just to be nice.0 -
I used to think this, until I actually lost the weight. Now I look at my pictures and realize I did indeed look the weight I was, and I was just kidding myself.0

I am an apple and I look FAT!! I am 200 lbs and hate it. I don't hink I carry my weight well at all. I look like a big round apple with toothpicks for arms and legs!!! (And an olive for a head???) I think I look pregnant... And I am 52, so that is not what I want to look like.
Clothes are a nightmare to fit, because I am not the traditional hourglass. I always have to wear super big shirts. Even when I was down to 130 lbs, I had to wear an extra large shirt....0 -

I can relate to this to some extent. Mostly it shows me the VERY noticeable difference between my appearance and body shape at say 240 and below, and at 260+. It's like a switch goes on/off around that point where I look horrible and relatively good. Honestly even at 173 right now I think I looked pretty decent and even good, around say 220...but not at 260+.0 -
Definitely.

I'm now at 140lb and have just decided to drop another 7lb and I constantly have people telling me to stop and then I end up saying my weight as I swear people think I'm down in the 120's and I end up telling them how much I do weigh! I also have people saying l look drawn in my face, people don't tell you that your getting fat and to stop eating!0 -
If you carry weight all over your body and it's overall a proportionate hourglass it tends to look smaller than fat being concentrated at one spot.
I was that way and I looked thinner than a 300+ pound person would because I had fat everywhere from head to toes. Having so much to lose I did not lose it proportionally, leading to some comical effects, it amuses me.. After losing the first 30 pounds I looked so top heavy like this
Then I lost weight from my back and went down from a 46 bra band to a 36 but still had huge arms, I looked like this
Then I lost my arms and a bit of chest so my belly stuck out more, it actually made people think I gained weight!
Then I lost some of the belly which made me look like a wobbly square
Then I lost the belly and the sides as if melted away near overnight but still had huge legs and looked like this
Now my legs slimmed down a bit but not too much and my chest stayed the same, but my waist continued to shrink as if by magic. I now look like a comical unrealistic extreme hourglass
Not sure what the days will bring but having gone through this amusing process I can tell you, certain shapes look like they weigh more/less than they actually do. I've been told I gained weight when I actually lost 20 pounds and that I've lost an extreme amount when I actually lost only 10.0 -

LOL Me too! My wedding ring is about 2 sizes too big for me now
But yeah I've heard the whole "you carry your weight so well" although now, looking back at pictures of myself, I think they were just being nice......0 -
You can see how I carry weight from my profile pic--slightly more in the butt and hips but pretty evenly distributed. The only place that grabs weight disproportionately is my upper arms.
I think weight is more noticeable if you're body stores it in the upper body and around the face, or if it stores it almost exclusively in the bottom so that you look normal weight on top but have huge hips. The face/neck fat is up where everyone looks at you all the time, so they tend to assume you have as much everywhere else and over-estimate your weight. The bottom fat stands out because of the contrast between top and bottom of your body, I think the contrast draws attention to the weight of the hip-heavy and makes people overly up-estimate in that case too.0
