HI~
I just joined myfitnesspal and would love some support. I've only been doing this for one week.. I am interested in losing 14 pounds since I'm only 5'1. I am 55 and work as a school counselor. I am usually quite sedentary but have found some low impact walking exercises on our cable channel that are quite good. I started weighing in late, but since I began to today I gained a pound. I don't understand it. Have you encountered the same? I was visiting my daughter and her family over the weekend and ate some no'nos, but I still stayed within the 1200 calories. I hope this is going to help me since none of my clothes fit me. I think part of my weight gain has to do with a new med I'm on, but I still have to take responsibility for the diet. Any ideas you can give me are helpful. I'm eating/grazing all day with fruit and a ton of water. Hope we can support each other.

Hello Gigi,
I understand where you are coming from. As a person who gets put on and taken off medications more frequently than I would like, I have found that can greatly affect your weight loss goals. Hope some of the stuff I will mention helps you stay positive.
First, grazing equals good, no matter what anyone might say. It keeps your metabolism at a peak and will continue to help you burn more since your body never feels starved. Keep in mind not to eat late at night though before you go to sleep. Eating too late wont give your body the time it needs to burn off the calories in anyway.
I am a fruit lover myself, however, too much fruit might be bad for your overall diet. Reason being they contain a lot of sugar. I try to mix-up my snacks, like eating raws nuts/seeds, then fruit, or a protein bar eaten in portions.
As for the gain in one pound, you have been doing the walking exercises which could mean you are gaining muscle. Muscle does weighs more than fat, so it will possibly result in a gain. Also look at your measurements. I seem to find that even if I 'gain' weight, my measurements go down (when I workout that is), which is just as important because you are losing weight, but adding muscle. This helps me stay positive.
I hope some of this is helpful to you.

Hi, Gigi, and welcome to the site!
You'll find that your weight does fluctuate and that's basically normal, which is why people usually recommend weighing in at the same time of day, and often not every day. That aside, if you ate a little differently than normal over the weekend, your body may be retaining extra water today, for example if you ate higher sodium foods than normal.
It's hard to really say more without having more information about your calorie goals and your exercise or being able to see your diary. For example, are you eating below 1200 calories normally? Are you eating your exercise calories? That sort of thing. Also, and I don't mean this in a bad way at all, but you don't have very much weight to lose. It's harder to lose as you get closer to your goal weight, because you have less wiggle room in your calorie deficit.
However, stick with it either way! It's hard starting, up, it really is. And if you're not accustomed to eating as few as 1200 calories per day, it can be quite an adjustment. But in no time at all you'll start figuring out what works for you. Good luck!0
