I am weak.

I walked up to town and back despite it aching to get a present for my girlfriend, I stopped by Burger King to get my mum some lunch as requested, and managed to not buy myself some as well. I'm so proud of that. But when I got back, my brother was having pizza for lunch, and it smelled so freaking good... and he offered me a slice... and I took it. I am weak. Anybody have any advice on how to resist temptations? I'm not overweight, thankfully, and I don't eat pizza/takeaway/crappy foods all the time, but I've already had an awful lot in the past few days... My main problem is crisps, I can never just eat a single packet, I have to eat five or six, I have an addiction to that, and probably Diet Coke as well. But I've done well, I haven't eaten crisps since I found MFP a week ago, but it's so hard to resist.

It sounds like you are doing fine. I don't believe in giving up everything as it makes you want it all the more. I eat something 'unhealthy' almost every day, from beers to crisps to pizza. It's all about moderation and portion control - for example, your eating 1 slice is fine! Just keep it all in your calories and make sure you figure out what macros you want to complete (I want to make sure I fulfill my protein macros, and everything else follows). Be kind to your current and future self!

Motivation is a personal thing. You have to find what drives you. Some people will tell you not to be so hard on yourself, but for me being my own worst critic is what pushes me. That and the fact that I can be extremely stubborn. It's like I turn to my weaker half who might be whining about pain or hunger or discomfort and I tell him to STFU already...lol I guess I'm my own drill drill sergeant.

For me because I am eating separate from my family I grocery shop just for me. I know nobody is touching my cottage cheese, broccoli and squash LOL I take extra time to prepare my foods, weighing and measuring and now that I am watching my own portions and taking the time to prep them I own it! I never waste food anymore and I have my meals all there ready. It's possible to do small prepped portions for one and everyone else can eat their stuff but because you put work into yours and it's better for you it gives you almost a sense of pride and ownership in what your consuming all week. I am not saying you can't eat a slice of pizza or what have you especially if it's not a weight loss issue but plan for it and be smart. Logging your food here makes you accountable and for me it helps me to plan for if i want a little extra treat now and then. It sounds like you're not preparing and therefore your just eating on the fly, stop by farm markets on those walks or hit up the grocery store with your own list for what you want to eat that week.

Also a valuable hint I learned a long time ago, grocery stores stock all fresh and better for you foods all around the outsides of the store for the most part. inside the isles is where you find packaged and imitation foods that are full of empty calories, preservatives and really nothing substantial that you would need in your diet. Keep that in minds when your shopping :) You are not weak, you just need to learn to plan and not to beat yourself up over an impulse to eat a slice of pizza.

There is nothing wrong with having a piece of pizza. The ideal here is not to give up life, its to learn moderation and incorporate it into a change that's sustainable.

Listen to everyone here. You are human.

Yes the obvious key here is to lower your calorie intake and up you activity . Having pizza is not going to kill you, but the point is to track it and move on. Also just to make a mental note of it for later when making other choices. " Well i had pizza for lunch, I probably should make better choices for dinner"

This is a journey not a race, it comes with lots of learning especially about yourself and the people that surround you. Be careful of the folks closest to you, they can sometimes be your biggest sabotagers and it's not always on purpose. Just out of old habits. If you are the person they are used to eating pizza with they are going to continue to ask. It will be your job to lay your boundaries. Your motivation will come as time passes, when you see better choices lead to weight loss.

Exactly this! I was offered a slice of pizza this morning and I gratefully accepted it. It wasn't my usual choice but it was very nice indeed.

People see pizza as the spawn of the devil but it really isn't that bad. Take it in moderation and allow for it, it's not rocket science.

Thanks guys =) Hearing all this really helps, I have depression and anxiety so I tend to be really hard on myself, so being told I'm being an idiot for thinking this, in a nice way of course, really helps. I'm on the right track, I guess I just need reminding sometimes. It's easier to see where I've failed than where I've succeeded.

You can laugh but for some people it's not so easy. My problem isn't with my weight, it's with my diet. I can't eat a lot of foods because they make me sick, so it's easy for me to eat crappy foods like pizza which I can eat, on top of my lack of self control, it ends in disaster. Just because you don't experience a panic attack from giving in and eating a slice of pizza doesn't mean others don't.

i said that you can eat pizza in moderation, and thats what you interpret it as... wow! :noway:
  • You are NOT weak! I believe that everybody is allowed a "cheat day" (within reason- don't eat everything that's in the fridge in one sitting).... please stop beating yourself up about it. Don't quit, you can do it!!!!

I gave up.. and this is why I am back here again, weighing a lot more than I should.

**I lost 72 lbs from1996-1997.. and then another 50 lbs from 2001-2002. Losing it (for me) is relatively easy, whereas keeping off the weight is another story.

Brush it off... a slice of pizza or a candy bar isn't going to matter in the big picture. It's all about moderation. It's perfectly fine to indulge a craving, just make sure it fits your goal and don't go overboard!

Only you know how you truly feel. I think you're being hard on yourself but if you know yourself that you could potentially binge to the point you make yourself sick then be proud of the fact that you only took one slice, look at it as a positive not a negative. Maybe look at the reasons you go so overboard on foods you can eat or like. Sounds like a doctor might be a good place to start, if you have an eating disorder or anxiety/depression to the point it effects your choices. There are people who understand what anxiety feels like and what it's like to be in a bad place. Start with what's really causing you to over think one food item and go from there. There are people who understand and can help, you should really start with your family doctor hope that helps :)

Also I noticed you love crisps, I'm not sure what those are but making room for them in your log and only one pack at a time is ok too as long as you plan for it. BUT I want to stress to you there are tons of healthy snacks that you can have a little more on that are better for you, shop around and check out other peoples diaries too for ideas. Be open to try new things
  • I think it would be a good idea to be honest with your family and friends of your addiction and what you are trying to accomplish. Just ask them not to put you in a "tempting" situation, for the time being....till you can practice "self control". Ask your mom to get her own lunch (nicely of course lol), and ask your brother to not even mention the "pizza" thing to you. Later on, when you have mastered "self control" than....you can treat them out to pizza with the comfort of knowing that you can control yourself!!

Sounds to me like you're doing just fine. Those "awful foods" are fine to have in moderation as long as they fit into your allowance and macros for the day.

One slice of pizza has you thinking you're weak? Really?

Recognize that you are doing well amidst a constant barrage of sensory inputs... eat the food, log it honestly and move on. There are many more opportunities to make good choices ahead of you.

Junk food makes you crave more junk food...

Try to limit yourself to one small thing every day, and only have it if you've had a good workout. That's what I have done in the past and am planning to do again as I've gained about 15lbs back of the 60 I initially lost about 3 years ago. I don't know if will work for you or anyone else, but it's worked for me. I feel like ice cream or cookies or whatever it is, is more special to me if I feel like I've earned it, plus I don't crave it nearly as much if I only have it in small amounts and not very often. I would also recommend only going out to eat / getting take out once or twice a week. Seriously... the more junky, fatty, sugar / carb-loaded foods you eat, the more you will crave. IF you do go out, you can try to eat reasonable choices, or limit your portion to half the normal amount, then eat the other half next day or for another meal later on. I have done that a lot.

I understand it is hard though... I've screwed up a few times over the last week. Pizza is always tempting, and it doesn't help when people who know you are trying to eat healthier or just lose weight offer it to you... (My husband did this a few nights ago, good intentions always but nevertheless my point stands)

My weakness is sugar. Anything sweet, especially ice cream, cookies, brownies, etc., is insanely hard to resist. So, I try to keep that stuff out of the house when I can, or tell myself it's not for me and make sure I buy something I don't particularly care for but that my husband and son enjoy. Then, I can buy myself something small and ration it out over the week for a small treat in the evenings when my cravings are the worst.

If crisps are your worst enemy as far as temptation, just don't buy them. Or, you could try something called popchips, which are crisps made from popcorn and are very light compared to most normal crisps (chips in the States.) Pretzels or mixed nuts might also be a good, healthier alternative for you.

Edited to add: For everyone saying ONE slice of pizza is no big deal... for some people it is. It's just too easy to spiral out of control from that one lapse in judgment for someone who has an ED. Self-control is important, truly imperative when it comes to losing weight, being healthy, and staying that way... One piece of pizza here, a cupcake there, a drink here, a bag of chips there, it adds up. If you justify one thing, it often becomes more things very quickly for people who struggle.

Pizza? Gods, this is a crisis!

Because pizza is one of the best delivery systems for protein, calcium, carbs, fat (yes, but a little fat isn't a bad thing), and veggies (if you're having veggies on your pizza). It may be high calorie (depending on the pizza crust and toppings), but it packs a lot of other good things in it too.

And you only had one slice - that's GOOD. It's all about moderation, and that's how you need to view your crisps addiction. Have a half packet of crisps as a reward. You run your required distance - you get a half packet. But only that much, for the day. (Am I correct in assuming that a packet of crisps is 40g or less - forgive me, I'm in the US). Just keep in mind the oil and fat that you're consuming.

The OP clearly stated that she had a problem with depression. Many people that are battling this in life also battle with learning moderation.

BTW...It has nothing to do with feeling sorry for yourself...it is about how you view life and yourself.

    Have a little compassion...

@Annie nailed it! Some people will never know the struggles of any kind of mental struggles and disorders and they should count themselves lucky they don't get it, but don't judge someone for their feelings and struggles. Mental illness, depression and anxiety are really close to home for me as i have family members who i grew up with struggling with different issues.

Depression is something you should talk to your doc about, i can't stress that enough...get the resources you need to cope, you don't have to go through those struggles alone. There are ways to manage so you can have a healthy look on food and life in general

I always find it hard to have control around junk if I'm hungry. So basically, my suggestion to you is , pick something that you really enjoy and budget some calories for it until after dinner when you're already feeling satisfied. so you're less likely to eat more of it :)
at least that's what I do.

Or have some back up low calorie meals in mind in case you see a treat you really want during the day. So if I suddenly eat some pizza then I'll have soup and veggies for dinner so I'm not still hungry because of eating that slice of pizza :)

So you ate some pizza. Just fit it in to your daily count. If you went over because of it, there is always tomorrow and you can just ease back on some calories then. The MFP gods will not come down and smite you because you went over one day. If that was the case, my butt would have been smited when I went to Shoney's on vacation.
