Gained four lbs in a week?

Hi, I'm panicking right now.

I reached my UGW a week ago, 110 lbs. For the rest of the week, I ate anywhere from 1,300 to 1,900 calories, exercise every day. I ate to my TDEE (1,900) yesterday and a few days back. I weighed in this morning at 114 lbs.

I feeling very depressed about it and I'm having a hard time getting ready as I try not to cry. I don't know what this has happened or how I can fix it :(

hi ya, first of all well done!!! Next dont panic its not the end of the world ok!!

It will go up a little and down a little maint of weight can be a nightmare some times, give your body a chance to settle and adjust.
Also are you doing the same exercise routine every time?, and how long are you exercising for?

Lets start with that one, and move on from there.

But remember it not the end of the world, you are looking good

when you switch from eating at a deficit to eating at maintenance all in one go like that, you should expect to see a gain. Your glycogen stores, which were depleted when at a deficit, will replenish and show a "gain" but you can rest assured that it's not a gain of fat. If it were me I'd go back to a small deficit, ditch the 4 pounds that way and then SLOWLY build up your calories to your maintenance level (increase by 50-100 calories a day per week - so week 1 you eat an extra 100 cals then week 2 you bump up another 100, etc) until you reach your maintenance intake. This will minimize the potential for gain as you move up to your new intake.

    Thats totally right
  • I didn't jump all the way into maintenance; only two days I ate my TDEE, the other days I was still at a deficit.

Hmmmmmmmm, I will have to think about this one, but monitor it and see it just be a bump in the road , but do not panic.

Did you carb load on those days? You would have to eat 14,000 calories over maintenance to gain that much fat.

A normal daily fluctuation. You'll probably only be your 'goal weight' for a few hours a week (that's why they're pretty pointless) your body weight will naturally go up and down during the day and week sometimes 5 pounds or more. Weigh less often and watch the trends. If the tend over a few weeks is up that's real weight and you can re assess

Not more so than usual. I did not eat anywhere near 14,000 calories over maintenance; I didn't really eat over maintenance at all.

The only thing is, I did weigh myself this morning and last night I ate a few spoonfuls (measured) of raw almond butter, which caused me to feel sick for some reason. I feel sick right now as well, nauseous even. I don't know if that's related somehow.

Then you just confirmed its not fat. Welcome to the world of water weight fluctuations. Eat some foods high in potassium and magnesium, as they might help mitigate some of the water weight. But considering you are woman, you are more susceptible to it, especially based on your cycle.

This is precisely why after I got to maintenance I learned to chuck the scale in the closet... My weight can go up or down as much as 5-6 pounds a day and no it is not fat, it is nothing more than water retention. I have a new gauge, it is 36 in. Levi jeans and as long as they fit loosely when I put them on then I could care less what the scale is telling me. (Note: I do weigh in once a month and record that weight in my journal). I spent 3 years and 3 months obsessing over that number on the scale and at times it was enough to drive a person crazy so this new method for me anyway keeps me sane...... lol I agree with the above, you have to have water retention going on cause there is no way you ate 14,000 calories over maintenance... Best of Luck

From what you've said, it's very likely water weight. Did you eat any higher sodium foods over the last week? And, anyway, most of us fluctuate by a few pounds during the course of any day.

its not uncommon to loss or gain 3-5 pounds daily, it's you want to weight 110 or less, I'd push for UGW of 105, you can then be in maintain mode, it'll go up to 110 and back down to 105 ish, I have a portable scale, I've proved this to be true. Stick with one weigh in a week, if you check it in the morning and again at night. I promise the numbers with surprise you.

Not to worry. Congrats on reaching your goal.
  • I could get to 105.. I could, if I tried.

The water weight thing makes sense but my cycle is just ending..
I figured all the water weight would be gone by now.

Question: does indigestion cause the scale number to go up? Because I think that's what's behind the stomach pains.

My guess is water weight. To gain 4 lbs you would have had to of eaten 14000 calories over the maintenance calories to gain 4 lbs of fat and you didn't. I would go with the glycogen stores and probably an increase in carbs and water. If you did any weight training you will also store water in the muscle. So basically don't worry about it unless it's 4lbs of muscle. In that case I want to know EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID!!! LOL

It's possible that food caused issues and increased weight, especially if you are constipated.

    BTW, how tall are you?

You are underweight already do not go down to 105lbs.

Why was 110lbs your goal weight?

Relax, it's just water. More important should be why you're trying to lose so much???

Well that does put you underweight. If you have a goal to tighten up your body, I would honestly look at adding some muscle or work on an recomp. Going down to 105 is not a good idea.

You don't need to get to 105. You already look extremely thin. Honestly, if you lose any more weight, you will look skin.
