Meal ideas for a newbie to cooking

I moved away from home 4 months ago and I've gained 13lbs since then.
I've been eating takeaways, ready made meals, binging on junk food as well as consuming a lot of alcohol.
When I weighed myself the other day I realised I cannot keep living like this - it's time for a lifestyle alteration.

I'm looking for really simple, healthy meal ideas. I'm on a really low budget so I can't afford to buy expensive foods and I'm also very inexperienced at cooking.

Any meals I've made for myself before just don't leave me satisfied. I'm left with an empty plate and a stomach/mind pining for more.

I'd love to hear anyone's ideas!

Thanks :)

I've been there and know the feeling. Honestly I just didn't care much back than but I wish I had. I actually learned to cook by searching videos on ***tube and have become confident enough to take good directions on allrecipes dot com. Anyways if you're line me than you probably wake up crabby and confused and want a quick breakfast without dirtying dishes.

    Awsome Oatmeal
1/2 cup (dry) serving instant old fashion oatmeal
    1 tbsp (peanutbutter)
    2 tsp brown sugar
1 pkt splenda (5g) or other if desired
1 3/4 cup hot water 95 seconds in microwave

Just mix all the ingrediants into a bowl but heat your water seperately and pour over it. Do not ever, ever nuke your oatmeal with the water at the same time. I think we've all learned from that first time.

This is just a basis, and fine as is but you can always add on whatever desired fruit such as bananas, rasins, strawberry, etc.

adjust sugar to your own liking. I find the preflavored instant packaged oatmeal is way to sweet for my taste. I enjoy crunchy peanut butter because I like the texture and the crunch. If you weren't on budget than i'd strongly recommend almond butter. Super yummy and better than peanutbutter. Usually I have 2 eggs boiling while I enjoy my oatmeal so I can add a quick protein afterwards.

I would start out by learning the basics, like how to make pasta dishes and stir frys. (I'm going to ignore anyone who replies and freaks out about the carbs. I love carbs. Carbs are my friend.) The reason I suggest this is that (a) it's a great way to get in a couple servings of veggies, and (b) you can vary what you put in the dish in terms of protein, veggies, and sauce. You'll probably get sick of it after a while and will want to move on to something else, but this would at least be a way for you to ease into cooking. Good luck!

Easy things, like grilled cheese sandwich and soup or salad, and fruit salad, are way more healthy (and cheaper) than takeout. Try grocery store cooked whole chicken from the deli, then venture out and try it roast one yourself. Even now, after cooking for my family for 20 years, Google is my friend for recipes :-) Good luck!

ETA: eggs - lots of eggs :-)

Teach yourself to cook with the basics food stuffs. Skipped canned beans and boxes of rice and such, Buy in bulk as it is less expensive and as easy to do as boiling water.

Roasting a whole chicken is about as simple as it gets.

Google and youtube are your friends.

Don't have pots and pans ? Go to goodwill and get a 12" skillet and a 4qt sauce pan and a few wooden spoons for a couple bucks.
