exercise counter

Options
Hi all.
I've only started this plan this week but looking at the exerciser counter it's stating that at 4.5 mph i have burned 5 cals for 10 minutes but according to my treadmill i've burned 60 calories..Five seems very low.Does anyone else find this problem with the exercise counter?

What do you mean by exercise counter? Are you using a heart rate monitor or app or are you talking about the MFP exercise database?

That really depends on how fast you're going on the treadmill (and the incline settings), along with things like your weight. At 300lbs, according to my HRM, I burn about 2 cal/min just sitting around, and about 10 cal/min cycling vigorously (150-165+ BPM). I've found MFP's exercise database tends to over-estimate most calorie losses (for me at least), as does sports track live, where Strava may tend to under-estimate. I went with an HRM as it can make a more educated guess based on your actual factors (age, weight, etc), and the actual load on your body during the exercise. Even then, it is still a guess, and 5 brands of HRMs will probably produce 5 fairly different numbers for the same workout with the same setup.

If you're trying to lose, set your error to be under-counting calories and you're more likely to lose/lose more. Or only eat half your cals back. Or both.

Hm, that's odd, I thought you might mean the MFP exercise databse so I went and tested out the listing for walking 4.5 mph, very brisk pace and it gave me 85 cal for 10 minutes. Was that the listing you used? Are you using the app or the website? I seem to remember there being some issues with the walking calories on the app recently...

While I agree with biggerman's point, there's no way someone would only burn 5 calories walking at 4.5 mph for 10 minutes. 60 calories sounds very reasonable. I'd log it as that.
  • Thanks.I'm using the website.I've also noticed that when i log my goals into my profile it comes up with a weight gain every week & month.Think it's reversed itself.lol.Hope so..
