Can yoga help strengthen the core?

I am planning to enroll in a hot yoga class to help with improving my flexibility.
I do know that yoga involves a lot of stretching, but does it also have poses that tighten and strengthen the core muscles?
Have any of you felt more toned and strong after regularly attending yoga classes?
Thanks !

Short answers: Yes, yoga can help strengthen the core, and yes, I definitely both look and feel more fit after getting seriously into yoga.I do vinyasa; the benefits were less visible when I was doing a gentler, slower style, but I was definitely working my core.0

Thanks for the reply. Good to hear that yoga helped you so much !
I hope hot yoga may not be the slow kind.. I really want to feel toned and strong in a couple of months too!

There is a Yoga Group on here if you want to become a member.
Slow or not slow , holding the Plank or The Down Dog" ( and I'm sure there are many more) for any length of time you are not used to - have you crying uncle in the core. Just don't push too hard, that is still my biggest problem.
Good luck.0
