I gave up alcohol. I drank at least a 4 or 5 drinks every evening. Why isn't this helping me in my weight loss?

How long ago did you give it up?
  • I haven't had a drink since Jan 4th.
  • It's possible that you replaced alcohol with something else... and not even realize it. I used to drink like you (4-5 every evening). When I cut back to just a couple a week, I was disappointed that I wasn't losing weight either. Come to find out, when I was busy drinking, I was eating as much. Now I eat more simply because I'm not drinking. I don't mean that I sit around and eat instaed of sitting around and drinking, I just mean that somehow my caloric intake from food increased without me even noticing.

kbray003 has a really good point. my husband wanted to lose some pounds for vacation so he cut back on beer. but he ended up drinking more soda. i told him to just drink water mostly. he did - then the pounds came off more easily.

everyone's body is different and adjust differently. it may just take time to figure out the right routine for you with exercise and diet and cutting things out. it will all fall into place - be patient

I agree, give it some time. Alcohol can do a number on your metabolism, it may take some time to get yourself going again.

I started a clean low glycemic diet back in october. I made excuses for the champagne that id drink every evening. It's lower in calories than most drinks, i've given up so many other things...etc. I lost five pounds that month and then stopped. I had 8 more to go and wasnt seeing any change. So, I gave up the champagne. Didn't add anything in it's place. I continued to exercise and eat clean and by thanksgiving i was at my goal weight. The only hting I can think of is if you're not dieting. Giving up alcohol alone won't put that big of a dent in your calorie deficit if you're not eating less...maybe that has something to dowith it
