Magnesium for constipation

Hi!
I was wondering if anyone has ever taken magnesium for severe constipation/IBS-C with successful results? I was advised magnesium taurate (Cardiovascular Research - Magnesium Taurate) might help instead of taking Senokot everyday, but can I take any type of magnesium?

Thanks!

I have spent most of my adult life struggling with constipation. About a year ago I saw a naturopath and she recommended that I start taking magnesium citrate every day. I take 2 capsules with each meal. I have NEVER felt better. No problems. Regular as clockwork haha. Added bonus is that when I started weight training, my trainer also recommended magnesium to help with muscle recovery (I think).

I just take magnesium for my restless leg and was warned that I might get explosive. It hasn't worked one bit for me and really wish it would.

My naturopath recommended 2 capsules 3 x per day and advised that if I became explosive, to cut back by 1 per day.

My bowels are stubborn so I've stuck with 2 x 3.

I used to suffer from this. Magnesium gave me stomach cramps pretty badly. :( I used a product called swiss kriss (not sure I'm spelling it correct) 1/2 a tablet a few days a week helped keep me regular (too much is like an atomic bomb so be careful!). Some of the products you add to water with psyllium husk are ok but gross to chug down and can make you feel crampy. My favorite though was adding flax seeds to breakfast cereal, salads or other foods. I loved this cereal called "Uncle Sam" Its sold at most Kroger groceries and I think on Amazon... harder to find at some others. Its essentially flax seeds rolled into cereal flakes. Flax seeds + eating lots of veggies and fruits with fiber at every meal was what made me feel the best.

I've had my gall bladder removed so I no longer have this issue but I can totally relate to your frustration. Hope you find something that works well for you.

For muscles and "other" problems, I take 400mg of magnesium glycinate (it's supposed to be more absorbable). I just take 1 tablet every night (it says to take 2 daily, but I find one is just right for me). It's helped me so much! I had to buy it online, the brand is KAL.

I have taken magnesium while displaying symptoms which were thought to be IBS at the time (but it wasn't IBS in the end). My bf took magnesium for constipation.

We took magnesium glycinate (chelated). Magnesium glycinate is more expensive and has - supposedly- better absorption, just like magnesium taurate. Magnesium citrate, is absorbed less so it tends to cause loose stools, which is what you want for constipation. Magnesium oxide has even less bio availability.

What we did was start with 1 tablet and increased dose daily until stools were soft/loose. I needed just 2 pills, my bf had to take 7 a day! I eventually lowered to 1 a day, my bf had to also take less after a week, and then decrease until he needed one (this because we were deficient in magnesium, and absorbing it in the beginning).

The Thyroid can also cause IBS issues including constipation. Reading round the subject on several National thyroid support sites and ""Stop the thyroid Madness" site, it is unbelievable how many symptoms can circle back to a malfunctioning thyroid.because it is involved in regulating so many of our bodies symptoms.
