At a regular check up appointment this morning my doctor gave me a month's worth of samples of Trokendi. Wants me to try it. I am currently counting calories and trying to exercise. The exercise is difficult because of a torn meniscus. I can't find any reviews of the drug from users, but lots of side effect info. Anyone have any advice? Thanks. (PS I have 100 pounds to lose. I have lost 15 so far.)

No. This is an epilepsy/migraine med repurposed for weight loss.

Has the idea of by-passing the medication and working with a qualified dietitian been discussed between the two of you?

How will you keep off the weight when you lose it with these meds. Keep taking them for the rest of your life?
Why not learn a healthy lifestyle, and lose the weight with calorie deficit?

We are recycling pharmaceuticals along with glass and paper, now?

I know all drugs have side effects, but these are the ones listed for trokendi. They are the most common. I could not take unnecessary drugs. There is another way. It is hard work and takes a while - but it has no side effects.

    Double Vision Severe
    Involuntary Eye Movement Severe
    Painful Periods Severe
    Irregular Periods Severe
    Drowsiness Severe
    Cannot Focus Thoughts Severe
    Loss of Memory Severe
    Dizzy Severe
    Fever Severe
    Difficulty Speaking Severe
    Nervous Severe
    Numbness and Tingling Severe
    Feeling Weak Severe
    Confused Severe
    Problem Behavior Less Severe
    Breast Tenderness Less Severe
    Chronic Trouble Sleeping Less Severe
    Low Energy Less Severe
Temporary Redness of Face and Neck Less Severe
    Weight Loss Less Severe
Feel Like Throwing Up Less Severe

I took Topiramate (Trokendi, Topamax) for migraines for a while. It was the new thing at the time. Yes it did have the side effect of less appetite. But the other side effects were horrible. Numbness and tingling in the hands, vision issues, nausea, and probably the worst, forgetfulness. A nickname for it is dopamax, because you can hardly remember your own name.

I would not take that med again unless there was no other option.

Oh and, when I stopped taking it, any weight that I lost came back, and it brought friends with it.

Is it like Sodoku? I wonder how much 'encouragement' your doctors being given to push these

For me, this just about sums up why these drugs are exactly the wrong approach.

Even scarier is the fact that they don't even know HOW they work. You are messing with your brain chemistry, and that has a multitude of effects. Marketing drugs based on side effects, as this one is--it's an anti-seizure med, repurposed, does not sound like such a great idea to me.

My doctor is a personal friend as well as my doctor. I truly doubt he's pushing it where I'm concerned. He has had such success he just wanted me to try it, but I have decided not to. Thanks for your input. :-)

I can't find any personal stories on line about it-only side effects, etc. It's very scary.

I read this lengthy post. It is wonderful information. Sensible. Thank you for taking the time to share it.
  • Hi All,
I have epilepsy and severe migraines. I have taken Topamax on and off for many years. Yes, it does have side effects, but to be fair most medications do. Risk to benefit is always on the table for consideration where medication is concerned. Would I take any kind of topiramate solely for the purpose of weight loss? Absolutely not. First of all weight loss is not a guarantee with topiramate, and even if it was the cognitive effects and hair loss that can occur make it a "no" for me. However if it's taken for seizure control or migraine reduction, and weight loss is a side effect, I'm not going to complain. I found I didn't think about food as much- a welcomed side effect for someone that has suffered from binge eating my whole life. It is being used off-lable for this disorder. I have recently started taking Trokendi XR and don't feel the cognitive side effects I did with immediate release Topamax. I don't have the link here but there is a study on line showing the difference between the group taking Trokendi XR vs immediate release and the study results showed less cognitive side effects with the XR group. As for the pins and needles, drink lots of water. I've never had a problem with my eyes. Also, pharmaceutical companies take existing molecules and tweak them all the time. It's a way to extend patents and create "new" versions of old drugs. Example- Ambien and Ambien CR. They just took the same molecule and mirrored it to create a "new" drug and keep it in the company portfolio longer.
  • When I was on it, we used to call it Dopamax....

Weirdest anticonvulsant I've taken, but lost 50 lbs in 6 months....the memory issues were surreal though. And I was so grumpy from being hyperglycemic.

Jcat, did you have the memory issues? I'm down to try an extended release version...
  • I was able to tolerate Trokendi for only 2 weeks. I felt very tired and my lungs felt funny, almost like it was difficult to breath. I am back to taking Topamax twice a day and my headaches have lessened. Weight loss has not been a side effect this time around. It would have been nice but oh well. The good news is my memory has not been impaired either. I wonder if it's because I'm not using the generic?

Took it, as topamax, for migraines a few years back would get rid of the migraine for about 6-8 hours which was nice. Problem was the migraine came back even worse once it wore off. Otherwise I had no side effects, not that I took it for very long the migraine returning worse than before ended that one quickly.

I found this thread in a Google search because I'm on it for migraines and want off it because it's so terrible and scary. After I see my neurologist tomorrow to switch off, I'm also switching to a different neurologist because I no longer trust him after my experience and after what I have read.

It makes me so dizzy, spacey, out of breath, and confused that I can't exercise. I've been angry, anxious, and suicidal. I'm normally a cheerful person. I am having trouble driving and almost got into a car wreck.

Yes, I lost weight, but it's interfering with my work, and I'm worried about my long-term physical health and brain health. The migraines were better than the drug. I also ran across this website that really scared me, and I was appalled that my doctor prescribed it after I read it.

I guess 1 question would be: is appetite actually even a problem for you? (A lot of people put weight on not due to excessive hunger or appetite..just not paying attention when lots of high-calorie foods are around, be it snacks or restaurants, or..., or snack out of boredom, etc, or the foods they tend to eat are high-calorie density/low satiety, or a few too many beers that add up over time, etc). If the answer is no, then most likely not worth the side effects to add a new medication.
