Difficulty smiling?

For some reason, I have difficulty maintaining a smile. After a few moments of it, my muscles begin to hurt and I tend to favor one side of my face over the other, creating a lopsided expression. Do you have any suggestions on how I could strengthen the muscles in my face?

  • How long were you thinking of smiling? Unless you work for Disney or something, surely you don't have to keep on smiling non-stop....?

My facial muscles begin to ache after thirty seconds or so...I just feel like my smile's too lopsided. It's not a matter of poor teeth alignment, I don't think.

do you have diificulty in opening one eye (or drooping of eyelid)
any obliteration in nasolabial fold on one side?
    difficulty in eating food?
when u show teeth, is your angle of mouth is favoring one side??

if the answer to any of the above is yes, then u migt be suffering from hemi facial weakness caused by 7th nerve palsy
and u might want to go see a doctor

I agree with the above ^^^ when I first read what you have going on it sounds like 7th nerve palsy, AKA Bell's Palsy, you can google it and go to a medical link for info on it... it typically will go away and there is nothing a Dr. can do about it, but it is a good idea to have it checked and documented to make sure that is what it is and that it isn't something more serious.

The only symptom of those I have is that when I do show my teeth, I do favor the left side.

I'll bring it up to my doctor at my next appointment. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.

Could be myasthenia gravis? Given its just one side it does sound like Bells palsy though. I had that and it improved in a few weeks with steroids. Is it a new thing? Most people recover in a few weeks but about 2/3 its gone within a year.
