Drinking wine is better for you....

than going to the gym??

I found this very interesting and wanted to share.

According to scientists.....http://www.latintimes.com/drinking-wine-better-going-gym-according-scientists-yes-261496#.VBwSzn1nly5.facebook

"Whoever said no news is good news was wrong. Turns out drinking red wine is better for you than going to the gym! How’s that for good news? Jason Dyck and other science researchers in the University of Alberta in Canada found that red wine, nuts and grapes have a complex called resveratrol which improves heart, muscle and bone functions; the same way they’re improved when one goes to the gym. Resveratrol proved to be an effective antioxidant when tested on rodents which is why scientists are planning on testing it with diabetics. If results are positive for the benefits of the complex, patient’s heart health could be improved just as much as it does when they work out vigorously.

While scientists and wine lovers are rejoicing over this news, doctors are still unlikely to recommend their patients to start drinking any type of alcohol as it can have harmful effects on your body. People should keep in mind that these benefits can be enjoyed only when having one glass of wine with your evening meal, at the most. Resveratrol is specifically found in red wine as are some of the beneficial antioxidants referred to when talking about heart health. Red wine is also known to reduce ‘bad cholesterol’ and prevent blood clots.

Other benefits red wine is known for (when consumed in moderation, constantly) are: promoting longevity, cutting risk of cataracts and colon cancer, reducing risk of Type 2 Diabetes and slowing down brain decline (which beer is known for, too.) We think these are good excuses to kick back and relax with a glass of vino every single night. Bottoms up!"

Actually the headline should read Red wine better than going to the Gym for Rodents! I can see all the rodent gyms closing as we speak

And the study doesnt account for the calorie burn and muscle growth, also it says it improves heart muscle and bone functions, but which functions? How did they improve? Who was the study published by? Because about a month ago they overturned the years studies saying that wine was in any way good for your heart.

What about the calories burnt and the muscle it takes to lift the glass to your lips?

Does anyone work out just for heart health, and not the other benefits? Heart health is probably the last reason I work out.

Someone posted this earlier in the week. I'll post the same reply I did in the previous thread:

Sorry to burst the bubble but you really have to read the actual study in question, not an article about the study. Here's the study's name: "improvements in skeletal muscle strength and cardiac function induced by resveratrol during exercise training contribute to enhanced exercise performance in rats". Just from the title of the study alone you can ascertain that it does not prove anything remotely close to what the article made it seem like. Not only was the study conducted on rats, it compared rats who had resveratrol in their diet vs ones who didn't and it's effect on exercise. Both groups of rats still did exercise. Shame that people can write such misleading articles.

Here are bullet points of what the study ACTUALLY found, mind you this was only shown in RATS:

Resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red wine, has beneficial effects on cardiac and skeletal muscle function, similar to the effects of endurance exercise training.

    • Combining resveratrol supplementation with exercise training augments the beneficial effects of exercise alone.

    • We show that endurance capacity is enhanced in rats whose diet includes resveratrol during a 12 week endurance-training programme.

    • Increased endurance was associated with increases in skeletal muscle force, cardiac function, and oxidative metabolism.

    • Our results establish that resveratrol is an effective ergogenic aid that enhances exercise performance over exercise alone.

For anyone who care to read the actual study, here is a link: http://jp.physoc.org/content/590/11/2783.full?sid=387b43df-6c1f-44e4-a512-624e720e53af

Most people think like this. Did you know heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the US? The only reason I know this is because I dance for a AHA fundraising charity every February.

Great. Well, I didn't make it to the gym today so I'll just go pour myself another glass of wine. Thanks OP :drinker:

Everything Vismal said! Also, keep in mind that you're looking at much higher doses of resveratrol than you'll find in, say, a couple of glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon. There are resveratrol supplements out there, but like anything, they do come with some side effects!

So, I'm taking this to mean, if I do both, I will be more healthy. ????????

Maybe I will do them together. Instead of water, I'll fill my bottle with red wine. ????????

No, but I don't know anyone except middle aged men who exercise just because it's good for the heart. I'm not saying it's not a benefit, just one people care less about.

I have thought that I run faster if I drink wine the night before. Now it seams as if there is science (however I may want to apply it) to sort of back me up.

Heart health is my #1 reason. My body can't handle my extra weight. That's why I'm even more encouraged to have a glass of red after working out ;)

I hate news stories like this. I think this is a fine example of the "Science News Cycle":

  • I always viewed aerobic exercise a workout for your heart as well as burning calories but to get the resveratrol necessary for your heart, I believe you have to drink quite a bit of red wine. You're better off with supplements.

    Wow!
My Mum died last month of heart failure. The last nine years of her life she could barely walk 50 meters before grasping for breath due to the major heart attack she suffered.

So yes health is a major driver to me in lifestyle choices including exercise, diet and weight management.
You must live in a very privileged bubble, maybe one day you might experience something that makes you appreciate your health more.

But as I'm a middle-aged man my views are invalid!
