I look at my calories on a weekly basis rather than on a daily basis now . ? Is this correct ? For instance I eat at maintenance ( 1500) , but some days I may have say 2000 calories and some days are lower .

From my understanding, it should work. The main reason to try daily is to adjust your eating habits to that of a healthy persons. If you feel confident in using weekly and are not starving yourself on some days so that you can binge on others than it should be fine0

Weight loss and weight gain are all by averages. If it weren't, we would all have a much easier time being the weight we want to be!0

If it doesn't, I'm in trouble!
I average the month out.
I'm trying to eat to my hunger. If I pay too much attention to the dailies, I won't do that - I'll be busy eating more or less than the days before.
Since I'm halfway to my goal, it's time to start thinking about how this will work when I'm done. I plan to eat to my hunger then (duh), so I keep an eye on weeks, kind of, and a good review of the months.0
