Insulin's Resistant, 15 KGS to go. how long?

Hello everyone,

I have IR and PCO's at same time. I was on medication and was given option to choice between losing weight and treat my self with food and correcting life style OR be on medication forever. I took the first option.

I started at 75 kg start of this month, I am already 5kg down. Most of it was for sure water weight, as I retain water too much.
Currently I am on low carb, high protein diet. 1200 calories a day. (In MFP I keep it to 1100 considering here and there munching)

I workout 3-4 days a week for 60 mins. Drinking 2-3 cups of green tea.

Now I am looking to lose 10 KGS in 6 weeks for some big event. Can you share any tips, how to lose more quickly?

Considering my work routine (12-13 hours a day), I can't actually increase my workout. Also with 1200 calories, I don't find much energy ????. I feel great but its disappointing if I won't be able to look good on my bhig day. ????

    Has your doctor given you information on which carbs are better/worse for your condition? The ultra-low calories and low carb would explain your lack of energy. I do not know much about it, but do understand that for those conditions some carbs are problematic and others are not. Perhaps see a nutritionist, if you have not already done so?

    If you have PCOS and IR, your will need to be low carb. Most women I know with that issue keep carbs around 80-120g per day. Also, the low calorie is why you are tired. And losing 3 lbs a week is probably not going to happen. Below are two groups that can provide more targeted advise.

    I am going as per nutritionist's plan. I can't have any kind of starchy food, reason being I swell next day. My full body swells and I retretain a lot of water. Same is with sodium. So now not even brown bread/brown rice/ potatoes of any kind. Can't eat much fruit too as it has natural sugar in it. My choices are limited to veggies and lean meat.

    As I said, I am happy with progress so far but I want to lose about 10 KGS if possible in 6 weeks. Is it practical?

    QT;

    IR and PCOS often go hand-in-hand so if it's any consolation, you are not alone.

    Both conditions have at their roots, the body's ability to produce and utilize insulin. Recent clinical studies have contributed much to the knowledge base that didn't exist even a few years ago. PCOS, however, remains very much in the "dark ages" when it comes to the causes and, more importantly, the "cures" (which as of now do not exist).

    Unfortunately, many in the medical community rely on years old "wisdom" and fail to keep current on the research, OR, as you have already found out, the "magic pill" solution.

    I'm not saying that your docs/nutritionists are in that group but I am saying that if it were me, I absolutely would not rely SOLELY on one (wo)man's opinion - at the very least, get a second. (especially as it relates to the dietary recommendation).

    As to your question re: 10kg in 6 weeks - yes it CAN be done, but NO it "should not" - it's not healthy, will likely not be sustainable, and is most certainly NOT necessary. If your nutritionist didn't VETO the idea out of hand, I'd be looking for a new one ex post haste!

    As others have said, if for no other reason than the IR, a low carb diet is your BEST (if not only) course and based on the limited info you've provided as to the recommendations of the nutritionist my first step would be to LEARN all you can about how to approach it since much of the advice received to date runs counter to current "best practice".

    The previous suggestion regarding the Low Carbers Daily Group is an excellent place to start. There are a number of members there who can get you pointed in the right direction as to where to find the research.

    For the time being, and IMO at least consider the following:
    1) DO NOT proceed with attempts to "lose 10kg in 6 weeks" (1/2# to 1# consistently is a much more reasonable goal);
    2) DO NOT embark on a radically increased exercise program while at the same time significantly reducing carbs;
    3) Research the reasons why low carb and "lean meat" (low fats) is a VERY BAD idea;
    4) Likewise for the "high protein" advice; and,
    5) As you progress on the low carb path, revisit the low sodium ideas we all "know" to be true (not)

    Finally, MFP is a very good cal (and macros) "tracker" - it's NOT so good when it comes to developing a cal/macros "targets" plan.

    Especially for folks in the situation you find yourself, "macros" are MUCH more important than cals (yes, they both matter but macros matter more) so use MFP for what it's good at.

    Folks on the Low Carbers Daily Forum will be happy to point you in the right direction with information on how to set up your targets and integrate them with MFP.

    How tall are you? Whats your workout plan? If you provide this I can set you up a calorie and macro plan.

    Depending on how overweight you are, will determine how much weight you can lose. But I suspect its around .5kg per week... maybe .75kg per week. Also, use the links I provided. There are many people that are very knowledgeable on the subject with PCOS. But you can eat meats, full fat dairy, legumes/nuts, and plenty of veggies. A lot of people will also use creams and butters to help get calories.

    Honestly, the best thing to do is set a moderate deficit, and start lifting weights (heavier = stronger). Lifting has providing me and many others greater changes in their body composition than just cardio.

    I am 5'1 so need to lose good 10 KGS minimum.
    I tried doing weight trainings at gym but I hated it. Reason being that its uniform for everyone at gym.
    Most of my weight is in mid part. Since I work standing and using my hands a lot, my arms and upper body is quite toned. I can't afford having pain in arms/chest which I got in body pump classes.

    For full day, I m taking about 200-250 GMs of grilled salmon/chicken . 2 big servings of raw or slightly stir fry veggies. Nuts, apple or pears for my sweet tooth.

    What worries me is even one slice of any bread makes me swell next day. I wonder if I would every be able to introduce some "unhealthy" food in my diet. Even for cheat days, once weight increases, it take whole week to go. ????

    Based on your stats, i would actually put you at 1600 calories (do not eat back exercise calories) with macros at 40% carbs, 30% protein and fats. That is assuming your don't have any medical issues. Also, if you don't have a food scale, then you should buy one.

    Second, there are NO unhealthy foods. You can have bread or any other food as long as it can fit it in your calories. Again, this is pending you don't have medical issues or trigger foods. Look at my diary. I commonly eat bread, bagels, burritos and I lose weight. The mindset of foods are good or bad isn't very health. Foods is energy and each macronutrient has it's benefit, be it energy, satiety, helping with muscle retention, etc..

    Third, you have to understand there are natural body weight fluctuations so don't get caught up in that. Looking at weight over 4-6 week periods of time to evaluate trends is what is important. In fact, it's not weight that makes you look lean, it's overall body composition. It's the main reason, men and women, can gain weight and look more lean. Muscle is more dense that fat and takes up a lot less space. Looking at the below link demonstrates that.

    http://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/2011/07/21/meet-staci-your-new-powerlifting-super-hero/

    Lastly, if you want to lose a few extra pounds before your even, for the two weeks prior, stop exercise and go low carb. Lowering your carbs will help deplete your glycogen that is stored which will cause you to lose water weight. Also, the lack of exercise will also do that same. Just recognize, that once you eat carbs again and exercise, you will gain several pounds of water weight. All changes to your food diary can be made in the below link.
