I have recently started mfp on New Years day and can say that counting calories has been extremely beneficial. I have lost 19 pounds and have cleaned up my diet tremendously. I am really excited because it see this more has a sustainable life change than any diet I have done in the past. I have not done any exercising and am wondering if that is why I really do not see any changes in my physcial appearance. I have noticed clothes fitting a little better, but not like I want.

I guess I am wondering should I be less focused on the weight and more focused on the exercise to change my phsyique?

If theres areas you want to work on specifically then weights do help. You may not notice the changes but they are there, I dont really see a difference in myself until I look at old pictures. Good luck.

I would say any kind of getting out or off the couch is helpful. Taking a walk or watching some exercises on TV even and working out as much as you are comfortable. Start slow and you will see your stamina get better. Remember it is a lifestyle change and each thing is getting you healthier. Good Luck and keep up the good work.

congrats on your success so far!!
  • Well done so far, you're absolutely right about it being a longer term change. Until I started using MFP I had no idea just how many calories I was getting through! Re the exercise see if you can add 20 minutes of moderate activity per day to your routine. I have an exercise bike on loan and use it 20 mins a day and it achieves three things. 1) it burns up around 250 calories, 2) it increases the body's metabolism which in turn helps drop weight, and 3) it increases the body's aerobic capability so your heart and lungs are able to deliver the same level of oxygen with less work as you become used to the activity. I think a combination of all three will help you get to your target. As you make progress you might try specific exercises aimed at the parts of the body you want to tone up in order to tweak to your liking.
