OFFICE JOBS. ERG!!!

…don't get me wrong I LOVE my job... but it doesn't exactly promote a healthy / active lifestyle (well at least between the hours of 9 and 5)....:grumble:
For ALL of these reasons I can't stand this job….
1) the vending machine (3 doors down... yikes)
2) my a** stuck in a chair 9-5
3) the mini fridge next to my desk (with community 'treats' in it) - more like poison
4) b-day's and staff meetings... = CAKE & pizza (why can't they serve fresh fruit or something?)
5) and worst of all in the mirror in the bathroom (it must add 15lbs) - not a good motivational tool...
Sorry i had to vent. i am sitting at my desk right now just dreaming of food... and a swear my butt in numb (even after my lunch time walk). erg. :grumble: anyone else have an office job / tips to keep motivated / active during the work day??? I am new to the office scene so ANY and ALL advice would be appreciated.:flowerforyou: Thanks guys!!!!

I have the same issues and it's worse when you're in an office by yourself 7hrs out of the 8. Quiet and boring... :laugh:0

I have this cool little thing under my desk that I bought on eBay. I think it is called a pedaler. It is just like a stepper but you use it sitting down. It was VERY reasonably priced- like 15 bucks for the peddaler and shipping. It even has a calorie counter on it!0

I'm with ya sweetie!! I worked my bum off yesterday at the gym (leg day!) and my butt and legs are KILLING ME. I don't notice it as much because I'm sitting all damn day....but the instant i twitch or have to run from the cake, I'm in H-E double hockey sticks!
And it doesn't help that my mom (also my boss) is a snack aholic and has all these yummy things.....oye.....
The best thing I have learned is to keep your snacks at hand and drink LOTS of water. It helps to get up and walk to the person you have a question for. Also, with all the water you'll be drinking, there will be multiple potty breaks, which peel you away from the computer!!
O! Lunch breaks can be split in half for a walk and munchie time!

Is it a large or small group? I work in an office-half the time. Our group is small and quite health conscious. We rarely have sweets around. In fact, when we do bring food for everyone it is almost always healthy. My boss brought Fiber 1 yogurt and granola for the office yesterday. Even at Holiday, I must say we rarely have sweets....
Maybe you know a group of individuals at your office who want to eat more healthy, and you all can resolve to bring healthy food. It only takes one person to begin a change...As for office parties-you can bring Angel Food Cake and berries or Macaroons-both sweets are low-cal and low-fat, and you can enjoy the social activities, and not feel guilty or akward.0 -
I work in a cube....i am on the phone literally the entire time I am there, I take scheduled phone calls as a health coach. I make it a point to get up at least every hour and either walk to the bathroom, go get water, go grab a coffee, anything to get off my butt for at least 3-5 min. Luckily I work for a health company, and as long as we're meeting our numbers they encourage us to do those things. We also have desks with computers that are adjustable and desk tops that can be raised so you can stand and type....and use the phone.... I would suggest maybe finding some stretches to do at your desk, or bringing in one of those big Stability Balls (the big blow up ones) and use that instead of your chair, or get up and take a lap every hour or two!! I swear it keeps me on track with my job otherwise i'd fall asleep!!
good luck!!! :happy:0 -

The more I think about it the more I think it is called a pedal exerciser. Here's a pic of what mine looks like.

#5, the reason you think you look like garbage.. I feel, is a corporate MAN ploy. Caused by florescent lighting.. nobody looks good in that lighting. seriously.. its all about THE MAN!
I lost almost 100lbs while working in an office 40+hours a week. Obviously.. its come back.. and with friends.. but.. yeah.. good times!
I munched on almonds or baby carrots while bored at work.0 -
At my previous job I looked for reasons to get up and walk.
I used the bathroom on a different floor and took the stairs, I kept snacks in my desk drawer that weren't bad, and I'd take the long way around when talking to someone in the next pod of cubes over.
But I empathize with you - there were times when I got numb butt too. And pizza/birthday cake/month long cookie explosion in December were a challenge. A trick my coworker would do is take 3 bites of cake and be DONE. This worked for me - once. I just had to turn it down or enjoy.0 -

I actually spoke to my boss about this great service. This company called The Fruit Guys (and there are others) delivers a box of fresh fruit to our office every Monday morning. It contains about 24 servings of fruit and has everything from oranges, apples, berries and bannanas as well as other stuff. I was able to convinve my boss to pay for this rather than her having to go to Costco and buy a bunch of junk. It works out great! Also, I keep healthy snacks at my desk like almonds for crunch. I am in a chair almost all day too so I know how you feel.0 -
Have you looked into getting an exercise ball? You can sit on it instead of a chair. It's much better for your back and hips and it's a great ab workout to just sit in it! I've tried to bring mine into work, but I don't have room to store my "real" chair and they won't let me move it.
I also try to keep healthy snacks around, and I avoid the treat table in the kitchen at all costs. I gained over 20 lbs after working here, in only 3 years, and now I've finally decided to take control. No more bagels, no more pizza, no more chocolates from the candy dish!
I think planning is the biggest thing that is helping me. Make sure you have enough healthy stuff to snack on so you never have to go to the vending machine. I always bring a variety b/c you never know when you're going to crave something different. I've also found that it helps to have at least one buddy who's in on it with you Good luck!0
