Fear is a great motivator.

Four people in my immediate family, including my late mother, have diabetes. Two of them have also had heart trouble. I am really afraid that my odds are not good and it doesnt help that Im 275 pounds when my healthy weight should be around 135. Its scary...
I know I have to fix things but Ive been heavy since I was 13. I have tried so many diets and I ALWAYS fail. My doctor told me yesterday that I need to get my weight under control or Im going to end up with some serious health problems just from what runs in my family. Im very scared, I dont want to worry about my heart anymore...

Its easy once you're motivated! Start by eating healthy and going for walks!
Set mini goals you can meet! Join your local gym!
The only thing you can do is exactly that! If you dont do something about it now, you may never?
    You need to start somewhere

    good luck!
  • The only gym my town had was shut down in April of 2010. But some people got together and volenteered to help get it open again. My friend has Just Dance for the wii, Im going to try that tomarrow. My boyfriend is going to teach me how to play basketball and softball... that will be interesting. :)
  • Hi. I'm posting this article for you: http://www.menshealth.com/health/cure-diabetes

I've been doing a low-carb diet since September, and have dropped 45 lbs since then. I wasn't diabetic, but there are plenty of people on the Atkins forum, and other low-carb sites that have been able to come off their diabetes meds through controlling their insulin and blood sugar with low-carb diets. It's definitely worth looking into.

    Good luck! :)

Hi there. I've struggled with my weight for years but have finally decided "enough is enough". I'm not particularly mobile at the moment due to an ankle injury that seems to be taking forever to sort itself out, so I decided that I would have to initially attack my weight loss and healthy lifestyle by eating healthy.

I'm eating three meals a day plus a couple of small pieces of fruit which I mark down as snacks. I'm not pigging out, but eating just enough to keep me going until my next meal. I'm usually starting to feel a little bit hungry by my next meal but am careful not to let myself get really hungry. I have just one rule when it comes to my food ... it has to be food ... real food. Not biscuits. Not chocolate. Not potato crisps. Real food. I have cereal for breakfast, salad vegies and a ham sandwich for lunch, and usually a big salad (and I do mean big) with either some tuna or grilled chicken or a small steak for dinner.

So, with January almost gone I find myself 3.8 kgs (8 lbs) lighter than I was on New Year's Day. I'm thrilled. There's certainly been challenges but I think it's getting easier. I'm hoping that as I get lighter my ankle will heal quicker and that within a month or so I will be able to start doing a 30 minute walk each morning. Perhaps that will then motivate me to start working on upper body toning with an elastic band or similar.

Don't be discouraged by having to lose a lot. I started the year weighing 98.7 kgs (218 lbs). I'm hoping to end this journey at 60 kgs (133 lbs). It may take a year for me to achieve that. It may take two. Frankly, I don't really care about the timeline - I'm just focussing on the end result.

My niece and her husband are my buddy's through this. I find it helps a lot. Being accountable to others adds a whole new dimension to this journey. Feel free to add me as a buddy if you think that may help.

    Good luck. :flowerforyou:
