I only got my Fitbit yesterday, but one thing has me puzzled.
I wore it to bed last night and it's logged 519 calories burned today so far, thing is I haven't yet moved out of bed, is it a discrepancy,or is it calories logged sleeping??

I just got mine, but my understanding is that our bodies burn calories simply by sustaining itself. Meaning, even if you stayed in bed all day, there is a certain amount of calories your body burns just to keep you breathing, keep your organs working, etc etc etc. Fitbit takes all of this into account, and logs all of it as calories burned.
When you get up and start moving, then the amount of calories burned fluctuates based whether the activity was light, moderate or intense. So basically, by the time you wake up, you are seeing the total calories your body has burned to that point, and by the end of the day, the total calories youve burned throughout the day, to include what your body burns to stay alive and your level of activity.0 -
Ahhh that makes sense now thank you, what a clever little gadget! ????0

Yup! I love mine already0

Yeah, that's your BMR that it's logged.0

I don't know the number, but I read somewhere that our bodies burn 3000-4000 calories a day just keeping us alive!0

That drove me nuts too and I couldn't figure it out. I emailed the company and they said for that first day, it automatically gives you calories burnt for the ENTIRE day (regardless of what time you turned it on). Those calories burnt are the ones you will have burned simply by being alive, even if you never moved a muscle or got out of bed0 -
BMR for most people is much lower than 3000-4000. But yes, our bodies use energy for everything. Your BMR is an estimate of what it takes for bodily functions (heart pumping blood, maintaining body temperature, digesting food, breathing, etc.) and it varies based on height, weight, age and gender.
Then as you move thru your day your body uses a little additional energy to move/control your body. And then there is intentional exercise which uses energy at a higher rate per minute.I don't know the number, but I read somewhere that our bodies burn 3000-4000 calories a day just keeping us alive!0 -
The number is around 2000 ish, pending persons height and weight.
If you go to the Goals tab you will see the following some where in there.
From Normal Daily Activity 2,150 cal/day - This is what MFP calculates for me. My activity lvl is set to the lowest, I am a stay at home mom.I don't know the number, but I read somewhere that our bodies burn 3000-4000 calories a day just keeping us alive!0
