okay so my boyfriend and I are doing this together, he needs it a little more than me but I love that were are eachothers motivators. But anyway, we have been trying to cook our own meals so we are eating healthier. We have made:

1.) Whole Grain Pasta with Vodka sauce
Fresh Asperagus
Steamed Broccoli

2.)Steak
Steamed Vegetables in pasta (made by Steamers)

In addition we went out for Sushi the other night.

our snacks have consisted of Light and Fit or Yoplait yogurts, Lots of veggies (he loves baby carrots and asperagus) as well as fruits (apples, grapes, etc).

We have also began working out 3 times a week. Roughly running/walking 2 miles each time. We will gradually start running and working out more, its just tough with school and work (very busy!)

I would love opinions on if you think this will help us become healthier. Im only trying to tone up a little and maybe drop 5 lbs. He on the other hand is wanting to lose a good 40 lbs for the police academy as well as toning his muscles.

If anyone has healthy recipe's for dinner it would be wonderful! We are always trying to come up with new things to cook!

**input pleaseeeeee! Thanks to all :)

I know the old school of thought was exercise 3 times a week....well...You really should exercise atleast 5 to really make a difference and hey if you guys are looking to tone it is time to breakout the weights....get some hand weights and hey a chinup bar and any video that uses those and do weights atleast 2 days a wekk then walk your 3 days a week witha heart monitor straped to your arm (So you know if you are working hard enough)

I think you guys will start to lose weight. It looks like healthier options, well except the steak made me raise a little eyebrow, but those things in moderation aren't so bad. I have read that baby carrots are soaked or sprayed with something that makes them sweeter and adds sugar. My friend and I tested it out by adding real carrots instead of baby carrots to a curry we made, there is definitely a difference, although we found the real carrots to be a little tastier and more flavorful.

I'd recommend searching for fish recipes, since fish is pretty low calorie and has tons of health benefits. Before I hated fish, but I think it's because I was always trying salmon or trout and it tasted too fishy to me if that makes sense. Tilapia, Red Snapper, and Mahi Mahi are good fishes if you're like me. You can usually pick up tilapia at Costco in the frozen section and tastes pretty decent.

I like steaming fresh veggies, like green beans, asparagus, brussels sprouts, and broccoli and adding just a little salt or something lemon juice or garlic powder for flavor, you could do that as a light snack or dinner if you had a bigger lunch.

Food.com has some good recipes and it tells you calories per serving. I've used it a lot for rice dishes, since I eat meat pretty sparingly.
  • I make a Vegetable Parma Rosa Pasta that is easy, low cal and pretty tasty. It takes about 20-30 minutes to make, so it is a great weeknight meal.

I use the Knorr Vegetable Parma Rosa mix with 0% milk and no butter. Their other sauces are equally tasty!

Then I steam whatever vegetables I have that day (julienne carrots, red and green bell peppers, broccoli, onions, peas, asparagus, mushrooms, etc.). I toss it all together with either a tri-color rotini or a medium shell. I top it with a little shredded Parmesan.

One tip that I can gi that will work for both of you is to stick to non processed foods. Those yoplait yogurts are loaded woth tons of added junk. Its better than FFs and burgers but if you are really wanting to eat healthier, slowly remoe as much processed food from your diet as possible. What are you putting on your vegetables before you eat them. Look to see if it contains saturated fat or trans fats this stuff is not good for you. There is a lot of saturated fat in red meat too so really limit it once or twice a month and trans fat is found in a lot of baked goods, nut spreads, and margerines. Don't drink caloric beverages. Seriously limit dairy to minimum daily requirementsyou can get xtra calcium form almonds and dark green leafy veggies. Drink water for the rest. Eat small meal every 2-3 hours instead of 3 big ones. Stick with serving sizes and log everything that touches either of your mouths at the very least for a month. Good Luck I through a lot out there but it should start to get you on a healthier track.

www.eatingwell.com has great recipes. I particularly like the lean and spicy taco meat when I am craving Mexican (which is often). http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/lean_spicy_taco_meat.html You can also make your own spanish rice by cooking brown rice and adding salsa. Ole makes these extreme wellness tortillas that are about 70 calories per tortilla. http://www.olemexicanfoods.com/OLEmenuTortillas.htm

Also, I use these tortillas often for a healthy lunch wrap. Spread a laughing cow cheese wedge on the tortilla, mix 2oz diced chicken, lettuce, any veggies you like and a little low fat salad dressing in a bowl and then fill the tortilla with the mixture and wrap! Its delicious, easy to pack the night before and so much healthier than eating out.

You can also check out www.myrecipes.com. Just make sure when you search for certain recipe you narrow it down by low-cal or from cooking light magazine. You don't want the Southern Living ones! They are tasty but so bad for you.

Also-be careful on the sushi. A lot of the roles with the aioli (aka mayo) sauce come in around 500 calories per roll! Try to stick to nigiri, sashimi or rolls such as rainbow that have a lot of fresh fish and no crazy sauces.

Hope this helps and I am looking forward to hearing others recipes as well!
